Women Use Help Line Twice as Much as Men in New York
The Help Line Telephone Center reports women callers outnumber men two to one. About 50 percent of calls come from people under 30, most of them female. The center handles around 50,000 calls annually, started February 1970 by Marble Collegiate Church under Dr Norman Vincent Peale. About 35 percent of calls are mental health, 16 percent marital or family issues, and many calls stem from loneliness with volunteers calling shut-ins and lonely seniors to lift morale.
