Drowning at Gladewater Lake Claims 16-Year-Old

Jimmy Rex Dockery of Logansville Georgia, 16, drowned at Gladewater city lake around 3 p.m. Wednesday. Witnesses said he was about 150 yards from shore in deep water, called for help, then disappeared as a rodeo party looked on. Acquaintances noted a possible muscle cramp as rescuers searched murky water.

Casting for Gladewater spectacular Thursday night

The cast auction for the Gladewater spectacular From Tilling the Soil to Producing the Oil will be Thursday at 8 in the high school fine arts building. Larry Osborne invites all residents age 9 and up to participate with a focus on city organizations. Rehearsals start July 9, three nights weekly, with children 4 5 p.m. and adults 7 10 p.m. Each session lasts at most 45 minutes as groups are formed.

Chamber Hears Plans for Clean-Up and Industrial Park

In a brief meeting the Chamber of Commerce board discussed establishing an industrial park to attract industry and heard B P Dake appeal for city cleanup week during July. He urged presenting the city’s best face for the centennial. A Gay Cemetery tour by Clarence Lee, Mrs Jo Wiley, Malcolm Stone and Dake noted heavy overgrowth and vandalized markers. the last grave opened in 1942.

County seeks bus service for Gregg County seniors

A Gregg County aging group met to explore low cost transportation for seniors to doctors, groceries, and taxes. They plan to apply for Title III funds covering most costs, with minor passenger fares, and may use one or two mini buses operated by paid and volunteer workers.

Friday night kickoff of the Gladewater Centennial features a promenade at 8 p.m. from the First State Bank corner with multiple Belle groups and a Kangaroo Kourt. The Grinder Switch Belles will perform with homemade instruments, and a promenade map appears on page 11.

The Gladewater Centennial Corporation announces limited edition sterling silver and bronze coin sets. Only 200 matched sets were produced, dies destroyed, and each coin is edge‑numbered with purchaser names registered for a time capsule burial on August 4. Gladewater Centennial headquarters will be closed July 2 through July 4. It reopens July 5 at 10:30 a.m. and offers same evening hours for promenades and Kangaroo Kourt on July 6, 13, 20, and 27.

More Gregg foster homes needed says social worker

Gregg County children require more foster homes immediate listing of at least 100 homes is urged by Mrs. Carol Thomas of the Gregg County Office Texas Department of Public Welfare. She notes about 40 children are in foster care with eight case workers and one aide overwhelmed.
