Longtime Gladewater teacher Herman Williams dies

Herman Walter Williams died Thursday at 6 30 p m in M D Anderson Hospital Houston after 12 days hospitalization. He was 59 and a 30 year Gladewater vocational agriculture teacher and civic church leader. Funeral was Saturday at First United Methodist Church with burial in Gladewater Memorial Park. He is survived by his wife Mary two sons a daughter parents brothers sisters and four grandchildren. Williams also led Rotary and chamber activities and held state teaching honors.

Spectacular Cast Auction For Centennial Pageant

Larry Osborne, chairman of the spectacle division, led a cast auction Thursday night in the Gladewater High School choir room. About 50 people from local organizations attended as interest grew in producing From Tilling the Soil to Producing the Oil. Rehearsals start July 9, and anyone missing contact should leave name, address, and phone at Centennial headquarters. Narrators will be auditioned for multiple voice roles including a narrative, character, juvenile, and two female voices.

DPS director forecasts 19 deaths during July Fourth period

Texas DPS director Colonel Wilson E. Speir estimated 19 traffic fatalities over the July 4 holiday as patrols intensify. The count runs 6 p.m. July 3 to midnight July 4, 1973, with Operation Motorcide and three fatality summaries to monitor the situation and urge safe driving behavior.

Council approves equipment purchases

The city council in a special session accepted bids for two city equipment items. Davis Truck & Equipment of Dallas bid 12100 for a garbage truck, while Allen Equipment Company of Longview bid 21500 for a John Deere front-end loader. Delivery is expected in about 15 days.

Welding course planned at Gladewater High School

Carl Jackson, vocational agriculture instructor, announces a July welding course for interested agriculture students. The program runs July 2 to July 18, 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday at Gladewater High School and covers safety rules cutting arc welding grinding blueprints and layout work.

Rotary installs officers and remembers longtime Rotarian

Rotary Club installs officers for 1973 74 at the St. Clair Restaurant with about 50 Rotarians guests and Rotarian spouses present. The gathering included tributes to Herman Williams who died in a Houston hospital and to Bud Weiser, a charter member and past president. Williams had 30 years perfect attendance and was a candidate for District Governor of the new District 583.

ETCOG Receives 33500 Grant for Justice Plan

Governor Briscoe awarded East Texas Council of Governments a 33500 planning grant to fund a criminal justice planning program for fiscal 1974.
