At the regular Municipal Hospital board meeting Dr S M Thomas was elected chairman with Gordon Mayer as vice chairman and Carson Kennedy as treasurer. Attending were John Osteen outgoing chairman Fred Lott and Raymond Allen plus administrator Bill Wagner and city secretary H I McAfee. The board votes to require bids for a proposed new intensive care cardiac care unit and outlines a May plan to combine nursery space with an adjacent room to create a four bed unit with flexible ICU CCU beds. May financial reports and accounts payable were approved.

Spencer Harris drills first geo-thermal rig in Hawaii crater
Spencer-Harris Machine & Tool Company marks its 40th year with a geo-thermal drilling rig set in Kilauea crater in Volcanoes National Park Hawaii. The Halemaumau Geo-Thermal Hole aims to tap super heated steam for power. Drilling began April 7 and reached 3000 feet May 26 the deepest hole in the Hawaiian area.

Dallas man shot dead in front of Durham Grocery
A 26 year old Dallas man, James Edward Van, was shot once in the chest at Durham Grocery on Highway 271 north and died on arrival at Municipal Hospital. Alvis Gene Johnson, 32, of 295 Ervin Street, was arrested at the scene and arraigned for murder with a $10,000 bond, later released after posting bond. Police and sheriff reports note limited details.
