Library exhibit showcases pioneers artifacts and vintage hat

An East Texas library hosts an exhibit of early pioneers with photos clothing books and artifacts including a beaver top hat with case. The hat 150 year old dress and an Eastern Star pin highlight the collection. The library doors open six days a week from 9 30 to 6.

Captain Wilkins Receives Vietnam Honor Medal First Class

Captain George H. Wilkins III earned the Republic of Vietnam Honor Medal First Class for active duty in the US Army. As senior district advisor at Kontum he coordinated sector chiefs to pacify areas, achieved top security ratings for 80 hamlets and 40 more, and oversaw construction of 7,200 housing units for refugees. The award was presented by Col. George F. Otte Jr. at Santa Barbara Army Base where Wilkins is stationed.

Rainy June Reaches 9.7 Inches As City Water Sales Fall

June rainfall totals reach 9.7 inches with a 44 inch yearly total. Lake Gladewater remains turbid, algae under control, sale of city water down 50 percent from last year. TV and computer linked home systems predicted to answer kitchen questions and print responses.

Oilmen leaders honor McKnight at Midland meeting

About 100 oilmen and legislators attended in Midland as Senator Peyton McKnight of Tyler received special honors for leading the fight against the majority consent oil field unitization bill. The gathering announced formation of the Unitization Safeguard Association and urged unity before the next Texas Legislature. Major oil firms reportedly spent 3.5 million to push the bill, with Exxon U.S.A. named among contributors. Independent producers stressed support for unitization only if economically justified.

Gladewater Roundup Rodeo Ends With Big Crowds and Cash

The 36th Gladewater Roundup Rodeo wrapped up with about 21 000 spectators. Shawn Davis of Whitehall Mont won this year’s Silver Spurs Award. Billy Hale of Checotah Okla topped earnings with 1136 79 in six and nine tenths seconds of steer wrestling across two rounds. Hale moved into second nationally in steer wrestling standings.

Briscoe to Head Speakers at East Texas Peace Officers Meet

About 500 lawmen their guests and spouses will attend the East Texas Peace Officers Association conference at the Contessa Inn in Longview. Governor Briscoe will lead the speaker list, announced by Longview Police Chief Roy Stone president of the group.

Funeral services held for William Soles in Gladewater

Funeral services for William Ellsworth Soles 84 of Route 1 Gladewater were conducted at First Baptist Church by Dr. Ben R. Stripling. Soles a 42 year Gladewater resident and former Sun Pipeline Company supervisor died Sunday at 5 30 p m in Gladewater Municipal Hospital. Burial was at Gladewater Memorial Park. Survivors include wife Anna, three daughters Eleanor McFadin Clara Rappole Helen Windham two brothers seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Pallbearers named. Burial under Stone Funeral Home of Gladewater.

Prayer and Programs at Monday Conference Session

Gladewater Hosts Regional TAAF Tennis Tourney July 19-21

The Gladewater Sports Council sponsors the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation City Tournament on June 26 and 28-29 at White Oak High and Ambassador College due to high school court resurfacing. Winners advance to the Regional TAAF in Gladewater July 19-21. Entry forms and fees $3 per person per event due by 5 p.m. July 25 to Barker Hale or James Walker. Tournament director is Butch Clay. medals or trophies awarded by division. Events include Mens Open Singles and Doubles, Womens Open, Junior Veteran, Senior Veteran, Mixed Doubles, and Youth classes with age limits and two-event entry rules.

Airport OK Clears Path For Gladewater Expansion

City attorney Ernest Martin says a state opinion superseded old limits on using county equipment for a city airport project. Construction may start when weather allows, with a 27500 grant from the Texas Aeronautical Commission and matching funds to be provided via county equipment. County Commissioner Hugh Camp plans work as soon as dirt can be moved.

Surprise Roanoke Letter Reaches Grandparents From Far Past

Mrs J D Connally found a letter from her granddaughter Sharolyn 11, daughter of Mr and Mrs Jerry Connally. The note thanked them for a Valentine card and a dollar and Easter card with another dollar used for an Easter hat. Postmarked Roanoke Virginia April 10 1970 with a 6c stamp, the letter’s journey over three years remains a mystery.
