Gladewater Faces Forward Drive on Route 271 Plan

The Gladewater City Council will decide whether to convert Main Street and Dean Street to one-way flows as part of a proposed Highway 271 improvement. The plan aims to ease traffic now and in 10 to 15 years with a future loop around the city, while avoiding eminent domain and displacing businesses.

Blood shortage prompts urgent donation appeal in Gladewater

On a Saturday Paul Bennett chief medical technologist at Gladewater Municipal Hospital urged an all types blood drive. He said shortages affect blood banks statewide and the local hospital struggles to obtain needed supplies. Citizens willing to donate should contact Bennett at Gladewater Municipal.

White Oak School Sells Two Properties at Auction

The White Oak School Board sold the abandoned Shiloh School building and a Scout Cabin near Roughneck Stadium for 4001 and 765 dollars respectively. Proceeds fund maintenance. They also awarded Byrd Construction the drainage project east of the campus for 38814.37 with 30 36 and 42 inch pipes and 58000 yards of dirt to be smoothed. Construction to start within 20 days and finish in six months.

Ground Broken For Goodyear Store

Ground breaking ceremonies were held Thursday morning for a new Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company store on North Main, at the former McKaig Chevrolet site. Attendees included Mayor Melvin Jenkins, E. V. Womble, Mack Wiley, Joe Jones, Bill Langford, Ernest Martin, and others. Doug Shaw of Shawnee Construction noted completion in about 90 days as construction progresses.

Hospital Is Debt-Free Gladewater Board Elects Officers

Fred Lott was chosen president of the Gladewater Municipal Hospital Authority for a year with Wayne Pollard as vice president and Carson Kennedy as past president and treasurer. The board said the last $160,000 in revenue bonds have been retired, leaving the hospital debt-free.

Mrs. Nola Inez Whitted Dies After Illness at 71

Mrs. Nola Inez Dozhier Whitted, 71, died Saturday at 4:30 a.m. after a lengthy illness in a local hospital. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Stone Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Gladewater Memorial Park. A Zenith, Missouri native, she had lived in Gladewater 38 years on the M. D. Shepperd Lease. Her husband T. C. Whitted died in 1951. Survived by daughter Mrs. M. D. Swearingen Sr.. four grandchildren Sidney Weber of St Louis, Mike Swearingen of Dallas, Molly Swearingen of Gladewater, Pat McCloskey of Austin. and three great grandchildren Ricky, Lisa, and Michele Weber.

Jenkins named administrator of Gladewater Nursing Home

Melvin L. Jenkins, longtime McKaig Chevrolet executive and Gladewater mayor, becomes administrator of the near completed Gladewater Nursing Home on Money Street beside Memorial Baptist Church. The facility from Great Southwest Medical Centers aims to offer extended and intensive elder care and will open mid August. Jenkins will assume duties after a vacation and training, while continuing his McKaig role and inviting applications for July and August hires.

Senator Strong Highlights New Legislation At Rotary

State Senator Jack Strong of Longview praised the recently adjourned legislative session as enacting major laws while criticizing Gov Preston Smith for vetoing the $2.8 billion one year budget bill and about 38 other measures.
