City Council Opens Bids on Garbage Equipment and More

The city council opened bids for a garbage packer body and truck chassis and for a front end loader. They tabled the housing lease request from Mrs. Jan Dacus for a city property used by a Boy Scout troop. The council referred bids to the city manager for study and authorized a grant acceptance for law enforcement equipment.

Gladewater history book seeks local stories for first 100 years

Nanty Byrd Mayer says residents who moved to Gladewater before May 13, 1973 should submit material by Wednesday for a community history. Mrs Mayer, Elizabeth Osteen and Mildred Barker host at the Gladewater Housing Authority office to sponsor pages and gather memories of the city’s growth past oil booms and population over 6,000.

Burglars Strike Gladewater Refining Offices in Week

Thieves robbed Gladewater Refining Company's offices in the T. W. Lee building during the week. They entered late Wednesday night or early Thursday, stealing checks cash and jewelry from multiple hits at local sites.

SWEPCO plans major capacity additions through 1983

SWEPCO says it will meet summer demand across its 25 000 square mile service area serving over 274 000 customers in Northwest Louisiana East Texas and Western Arkansas with a total generating capability of 1 607 000 kilowatts. The utility operates five plants and interconnected systems to improve reliability. Future plans include a 351 000 kilowatt unit at Knox Lee near Longview in early 1974 and coal fired units in 1977 1978 1981 and 1983. The additions will push total generating capacity above current levels.

The 36th Gladewater Roundup Rodeo drew over 7,000 fans Friday night with standing room only, as J C Bonine of Hysham Montana was thrown from Texas Sam to land in the box seats. He returned to compete, with an 82 score marking a high for saddle bronc riding.
