Council Tables Plea to Extend Beer Sale Hours

At the regular meeting the city council denied a tavern operator’s request to amend ordinance 1061 to allow beer sales after 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Patricia Caughron spoke for the Ballroom Lounge and urged reconsideration, citing a 128-name petition and citing May DWI offenses of 57 filings and 87 fines in corporation court.

Funeral services held for Bessie Mae Monk in Longview

Bessie Mae Monk 52 died Thursday at Good Shepherd Hospital Longview after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Rev Grady Moore and Rev David Crosby officiating. Interment in Union Grove Cemetery. Survivor: husband Robert L Monk, daughter Edna Moore, mother Mrs Emma Turner, three brothers BE Turner Oliver Turner Billy Joe Turner, one grandchild. Mrs Monk resided at 107 Lewis Street Gladewater, Oklahoma native.

Revival at Pritchett Baptist Church Opens Soon

A week long revival begins Sunday at Pritchett Baptist Church with evangelist Bro J B Hearty. A song service at 7 pm precedes worship at 8 pm nightly. Public invited to attend as part of the church’s outreach.

City council approves limited fire service for rural areas

In a Wednesday special session the city council ordered Gladewater fire department to respond to house fires only in rural unincorporated areas from July 1 to September 1. After September 1 a reassessment will follow based on Upshur County commissioners court response and resident impact.

Council weighs curtailing Gladewater fire services

The Gladewater council, urged by Dr. Tom Armstrong and George Thomas, considers ending city fire protection amid stalled contracts with Upshur County and negotiations with Gregg and Smith Counties. Gladewater Hospital reports sound fiscal year end

Gladewater Municipal Hospital auditors report a sound financial position at March 31 after past stress. Funds restored to the building fund, nursing scholarships resumed, and $70,000 for new equipment purchased. Lease with the City of Gladewater expires Sept 1 1976 and may renew.

Longview Man to Leave Hospital Bed After Injury

Longview resident Doug Honea, 19, suffered a severe leg injury in a Lake Gladewater boating accident Sunday June 13. His leg was amputated and he is expected to leave Gladewater hospital next Wednesday after four weeks of recovery. Pace, another Longview resident, was treated and released.

At the Gladewater school board meeting it was corrected that Scotty Barber did not resign for Exxon instead he is now with Brown and Root Construction Co in Longview. The update clarifies Barber’s new association and ends the prior resignation claim.

Gladewater police chase multiple burglaries and assault

Gladewater officers arrested and charged several suspects after an alleged pistol assault on Darnell Jones and two related burglaries. J C Jones Jr 26 and Donald Lynn Henson 21 face aggravated assault with a pistol charges with bonds set at 3500 each. Jimmy Jack Jordan 31 was tied to the December burglary of Sterling Silfies residence with 3300 bond. Charles Gordon Weeks 30 arrested on burglary and probation violation with 3500 bond after allegedly stealing antiques from Cleo's Grocery. Authorities recovered eight antique clocks in the Shreveport area search.
