Larry Ferguson of Miami Oklahoma earned 1166.20 after top times in calf roping and steer wrestling at the 39th Gladewater Round-up Rodeo. His brother Tom, last year’s All-Around champ, assisted with the payout as Larry left with the large prize while most contestants won little.
Larry Ferguson of Miami Oklahoma won 1166.20 in Calf Roping and Steer Wrestling. He shared fourth in calf roping first go-round with Billy Doenz earning 68.60, took second in second calf roping go-round 411.60 and second in average on two calves 411.60. He split fourth in steer wrestling first go-round with Roy Duvall 54.88 and finished third in average on two head 219.52 after a rough first go-round. The Silver Spurs award went to announcer Chuck Parkinson on his 25th consecutive Gladewater appearance, presented by Round-up President Jack Phillips who called the rodeo a success. Parkinson of North Hollywood California is a top rodeo announcer and former contestant with deep knowledge of the sport.
After a three hour meeting, Gladewater School Board President John Shipp announced he will resign in April after twelve years as a member. He said the decision ends his three terms as president and was not due to conflict with the board or administration, citing an overloaded schedule.
At a June meeting two agenda items were listed for Gladewater Municipal Hospital. The board discussed the year end audit for March 31, 1976 and a cancer insurance policy for employees paid by the employee through payroll deductions. Resignations from Scotty Barber and Terry Hopkins were approved. Hopkins plans to apply to highway patrol school. Barber will leave for a job with Exxon. Dwaine Benedict and John Boston were hired to replace them. New teaching positions were filled at Gay Avenue Elementary and Broadway.
City Council in a special session to review City Manager Tony Williams's fire protection proposals for unincorporated Upshur Gregg and Smith County areas near Gladewater. Williams cites $100,000 annual cost with Upshur County offering only up to $50 monthly, and discusses potential policy alternatives and possible termination of rural services.
City Manager Tony Williams announces a new water and sewage services contract between Gladewater and Clarksville City. Clarksville will pay 95 cents per thousand gallons for treated water and 65 cents for sewage disposal, a 325 percent rise from the prior rates. The deal awaits ratification by both city councils.
David Fenton son of Mr and Mrs Richard Fenton has moved from intensive care at Good Shepherd Hospital to room 225 after major surgery. He is now in extremely critical condition but has shown good recovery progress as doctors report. Friends are encouraged by the improvement.
Doug Honea, 19, was struck by a propeller aboard a ski boat on Lake Gladewater near the west shore shortly after 2 pm. He lost his right leg above the knee and remained in fair condition at a Tyler hospital after surgery. David Pace, 19, suffered a cut and bruise and was treated and released.
