Bryan Kirbo Elected to Boys State Office
Bryan Kirbo son of Mr and Mrs Perry Green returns from Austin where he attended the 31st annual American Legion Boys State at the University of Texas. He was elected to the House of Representatives and participated in precinct county and state events as part of school leadership training with athletic competitions among 18 cities. The trip featured a Capitol visit and a day serving in office. Funeral services for Rossie Leon Raymond 79 were held at Stone Funeral Chapel with interment at Rock Springs cemetery. She is survived by a son three daughters and other relatives.

Miller Receives Doctor of Medicine Degree at UT Southwestern
William Wade Miller a 1962 Cooper High School graduate earned the Doctor of Medicine degree on June 7 at UT Southwestern Medical School Dallas twenty ninth graduation. He studied at Southwestern and taught summer courses at Texas Womens University School of Nursing and precepted at Springfield Memorial Hospital. He holds a BA from UT Austin and did zoology graduate work. He is married to Darrellene Havins and will intern at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

Barnes enters Texas governor race at captiol news conference
Lieutenant Governor Ben Barnes announced on Monday his candidacy for Texas governor in next year’s elections. At a State Capitol news conference he ended speculation about pursuing the U S Senate. Barnes, 33, has over ten years in Texas public office, beginning with the 1960 House election from De Leon and rising to Speaker in 1965. He was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1968 and reelected in 1970, the first Texas candidate to top two million votes.

Shoot-out Near Pittsburg Ends in Fatality
Two Mt. Vernon brothers Andy West and Charles West engaged law officers on Highway 271 south of Pittsburg in a gunfight. Texas Ranger Red Arnold and Lt. Harold Rester shot Andy West fatally and critically wounded Charles West after officers were held at gunpoint and assaulted.
