The Mirror reports Linda Louann Elrod born Friday at City Hospital at 4:04 pm weighing 7 lb 7 1/4 oz. She has a 2 year old brother Michael. Parents celebrate wedding anniversary and daddy’s birthday on the same day.
Ronald R. Ferguson named White Oak High School band director succeeding Jerry Hanszen who resigned. Gene Parker named assistant band director, with Mrs. Margaret Parker English instructor and Mrs Anice Lewis resigning. Ferguson, a Henderson native and Kilgore Junior College graduate, led bands at West Rusk and holds a Bachelor of Music Education 1969. He specializes in baritone horn and offers private guitar lessons. The band earned Buckaneer Festival Class A outstanding band, Sweepstake Award, and first division marching honors at the UIL competition last year.
Marilyn Godfrey music teacher at Gay Avenue School Gladewater will attend the 109th annual NEA convention as an official delegate June 26 to July 2 in Detroit Michigan. She attended an orientation in Austin with Texas delegation leaders including Archie Roberts TSTA president and other state officers.
Mrs. Cliff Bowden of Gay Avenue school faculty will present a Tuesday afternoon story telling program at Gladewater Public Library for elementary students. The film strip Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves with narration will start at 1 p.m. A Kilgore College play follows Wednesday at 1 p.m. via Children's Theater Production Company in Van Cliburn Auditorium. A bus departs 12:30 p.m. and returns by 2:30 p.m. The event is free.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 10 a.m. for Mrs. Mary Pearl Murray 45 of 611 Wood who died in a Gladewater nursing home after a long illness. Rev. Chester Gleason officiated in Stone Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Gladewater Memorial Park. Surviving are two sons and two daughters, plus her mother, sister and brother. Pallbearers named.
John Bruce Moore received a Doctor of Laws degree at Harvard University’s 320th Commencement on June 17 alongside about 1500 undergraduates from Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges. Temple Burn Ingram earned a Bachelor of Arts degree as part of the ceremony. Funeral services for Leonard B. McElroy 67 are pending in Belton Texas with burial in that city. He had been a longtime Gladewater resident and Humble Oil electrician. He is survived by his wife two daughters a son and two brothers.
