The 34th Gladewater Round-Up Rodeo drew large crowds with 219 top cowboys competing for over 14000 in prizes. Johnny Quintana earned a 94 point ride on V61 winning the Silver Spur, while funeral plans surfaced for Leonard Pickett, Gilmer schools administrator.
Elementary students will hear Mrs. C. B. McKenzie recount Flight of the Doves by Macken at the one o clock story telling session Tuesday. Jack Wilde will appear in the story as it is shown in the moving picture. The tale follows an eleven year old boy and a seven year old girl who run away and are helped along the way. A mysterious part awaits discovery at the end and all are invited to learn what it is.
Mrs. Billie Coffey owner of Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio announced a beauty salon opening with Jan Dacus as operator. The salon opens Tuesday at the N Main location with appointments starting then. Coffey plans three full time operators in the near future and invites local ladies to visit.
Rodeo announcer Chuck Parkison hailed Johnny Quintana after a fearless ride on the bull V61. Quintana scored 94 points, the highest Parkison has ever announced in his long rodeo career as the bull showed no signs of weakening.
Gov Preston Smith signed Senate bill 419 creating Tyler State College at the Rose Garden Center in Tyler. He credited Rep Billy Williamson and Sen Lindley Beckworth for passage. Planning spans 1971 72 73 with construction possible by 1975 and classes by 1976.
Gladewater High School hosts a summer workshop starting Monday through July 9 for adults and older girls in the homemaking department. The program features crafts such as gold leafing, garden swinging baskets, porcelain plaques, crochet, fondue cooking, macrame, candle making, and foil decoration with demonstrations by local instructors.
Melissa and Jason Rogers visit grandparents in Fort Worth as William Rogers moves toward a Virginia church post. A hand painted china show titled Tomorrow's Antiques comes to Kilgore. Dr Donal Steph addressed Tyler Junior College nursing cap and gown ceremony. Mrs Dillard attends a Presbyterian General Assembly in Virginia then visits Blacksburg.
