Youth Tutoring Youth program at Gladewater High

The second summer of the Youth Tutoring Youth program runs at Gladewater Middle School under Rachel Bynum. The Human Development Corporation program, funded by CETA through East Texas Council of Governments, aims to improve academics for Kindergarten through sixth grade. Registration occurred Monday 8 am to 5 pm at the School. Supplies are provided. transportation must be arranged by parents. Gladewater High School students tutor again this year. The program is open to all students, not just the underprivileged.

Taxpayers advised of new valuations in Gladewater ISD

Notice informs Gladewater County Line Independent School District property owners of a complete 1977 reappraisal by Pritchard and Abbott Valuation Company. Letters include property lists, 50 percent of full value, and a chance to testify before the Board of Equalization at a set time and place. Delinquent taxes begin January 31 following September mail.

Gladewater rodeo crowns winners in 40th annual roundup

The 40th Gladewater Round-Up Rodeo concluded with top prizes across events led by Jack Ward in bareback bronc and Mike Dowdy in bull riding. Calf scramble winners were selected from FFA and 4-H groups, with many additional winners in calf roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc, and barrel racing.

City to honor three residents for Lake Gladewater rescue

The council will approve a Memorial Day tribute for three locals who helped save eight year old Eddie Floyd Derrick from Lake Gladewater. Fireman Wayne Smith performed mouth to mouth resuscitation, reviving the boy found by Lovie Sue Wallace and assisted by Eddie Greggston. The ambulance arrived within two minutes and the child fully recovered.

Gladewater City Council Sets Wide Agenda

The council will hold a public hearing on a zoning change request and hear from three citizens. They will consider bids on airport, police, fire, and street equipment, bid recommendations on right of way fencing for Loop 485, create a Lake Gladewater board with seven members, approve audits for 1976-77, appoint an auditing firm for 1977-78, and enter a contract with Texas Parks and Wildlife for the city park lake development.

East Texas Officers Convene 26th Convention in Longview

Gregg County Sheriff Tom Welch and Longview Police Chief Roy Stone host the 26th annual East Texas Peace Officers Association meeting. About 475 to 600 delegates expected with registration at the Contessa Inn. The event features a reception, talks by Col. Pat Speir and Ted Gunderson, and a banquet address by Judge Kay Baker.

Gladewater’s Demers earns all star game spot in Houston

Gladewater High School second baseman Paul Demers, a 328 batting average with 36 steals, was named to the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association North squad for the June 25 Astrodome game. Mt Pleasant’s Joey Giamfortone is the only other East Texan on the roster. Demers, a Burkburnett transfer, may announce college plans after the game as he remains undecided. Benedict notes Demers was leadoff hitter with only five strikeouts last season.

Flea Market and Fireside Ice Cream Supper Benefit

The American Legion sponsors a flea market at Rodeo grounds Highway 80 West. West Mountain Fire Dept Ladies Auxiliary hosts a homemade ice cream and cake supper on Saturday June 18 from 2 to 7 pm on new land two miles north of Highway 726 on Highway 271 in West Mountain.
