Months of planning culminate in a week of rodeo activities as the band strikes up the first note for the street dance Tuesday night signaling the start of Gladewater’s rodeo week.
The 38th annual rodeo kicks off with an 8 p.m Monday dance in front of city hall. Cowboys entering Wednesday to Saturday events must register at Gladewater's all steel arena while a 4 30 p.m parade Wednesday precedes the opening show by about three hours as fans head toward the arena on Highway.
Westside crowds pack in after the parade as pre show ticket sales rise. Martha Springer runs the ticket office while Gladewater Round-Up Association President Jack Phillips notes nightly rodeo begins at 8 15 with grand entries. The event features riding roping wrestling calf scramble scholarships and a nightly pony giveaway with reserved seats and gate sales at $3.
A coordinated three-county operation led to 34 arrests on drug charges with 13 in Harrison County and others in Gregg and Upshur Counties. Grand juries issued 14 sealed indictments for Gregg and 16 for Upshur, bonds set at 80 000 and 265 000 respectively. Investigation by DPS continues with undercover agents and local agencies coordinating.
Sawyer, Bill Ledbetter and Roy Blake led the operation with Longview detectives Mike Maxey and Mike Query, Texas Ranger Glen Elliott and highway patrolmen. Authorities credited the DPS for aid in Gregg Upshur and Harrison County arrests and pledged to identify suspects and monitor targets to curb narcotics traffic.
The Ft. Worth firm Knowlton Ratliff English Flowers presented an Airport Master Plan to the seven member airport board. The plan outlines three construction phases and seeks FAA and Texas Aeronautical Commission funding. City Manager Tony Williams attended as board members reviewed pre-application forms and East Texas Council of Governments recommendations. Trials referenced by Hill are set for June 13 with expedited process. Gregg County Sheriff notes drug related charges for Swanson Minix Williams Sheffield.
Davidson Ford Sales on Hwy 80 East hosts a two day anniversary with free ice cream for kids on June 11 and a pancake breakfast for all June 12 starting 6 30 am. Special June pricing, door prizes, and reserved seating options offered. Concessions to be run by local groups. Also notes the death of James Minter of Gladewater with funeral plans and survivors listed.
The council approved three zoning changes including a corner site at Dean Street and US 80 for a coin operated car wash. They updated plumbing fire electrical and building codes and adopted a dilapidated structures ordinance. Final lake rules were tabled for next meeting. The 1974 city audit showed a general fund surplus of 109,983, with overspending of 16,451.23.
Dr. Carlos W. Davis is installed as pastor at First United Methodist Church with Rev George F. Kutch presiding. His sermon titled The Place Where Thou Standest and a reception follow, as the congregation welcomes the new minister and his wife to the parsonage.

Roy Richard Baker 50 of Kilgore drowned while freeing a snagged fishing line at the second hole below Lake Gladewater dam. His body was recovered about 5:35 p.m. by Gladewater fireman divers. The death was ruled accidental. Baker was with his wife Dorothy Baker and two youths nearby tried to help. Funeral services were held in Kilgore with burial in Kilgore Cemetery. survived by a wife, three daughters, two sons, four sisters, two brothers, and nine grandchildren.
Taylor Jobe of Gladewater and president of the Texas State Board of Pharmacy opposes FTC plans to let stores advertise prescription drug prices. He argues the move harms professionalism, pressures doctors, risks elderly patients dropping maintenance meds, and could overrule state authority. He cites imported drugs and standards concerns. A separate note covers Little League safety, urging supervision at games to prevent injuries, with police possible intervention for unsupervised children.
