Death of Rev Paul Owens pastor at St Theresa’s Church
The Rev. Paul Owens, pastor of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, died at 2:15 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony’s Center in Houston. He had been active with the church for years before The Rev. John Rohrman was appointed assistant pastor. Services are pending.

Gladewater Council Sets Early May Meeting Agenda
Gladewater city council will meet Thursday at 7 30 p m one week early for the rodeo. Items include accepting a Texas Highway Department grant for 95 percent funding of a flashing light at Ferry Street railroad crossing, bids for a tractor and a riding lawnmower for the Memorial Park, bids for Hampton Street paving, and studying Hart Engineering contract for Step 1 of the sewer project focusing on water seepage into lines. The Hart contract was awarded at the April meeting.

Glade citizens join Tech math staff this fall
Three Gladewater natives join Texas Tech University mathematics faculty for the fall term. Dr Dean Victory and Frances Ann Moore teach as assistants, with Steve Davidson joining as teaching assistant after earning a BA at Stephen F Austin State University. Davidson will pursue a MS in mathematics at Tech. Victory holds BA Rice 1968 MS Purdue 1970 PhD Purdue 1974 and has been a TTU lecturer since 1974. Moore earned a TTU BA in 1974 and began work toward an MA in mathematics.

Texas legislative approves beginning teacher pay raise
The Texas Legislature approved a $1,400 beginning teacher pay raise as part of the education finance bill. Some districts may divert above minimum amounts, with Gladewater and Gregg County districts debating whether to maintain above minimum pay while adding the state increase. Gov.
