The Lee Public Library starts its regular summer program this week with a reading incentive: one liberty bell for each book read. A school age children program is set for Tuesday at 1 00 pm. There are pets available for adoption including four kittens and five puppies. Call numbers are provided for interested buyers.
Funeral services with full military honors will be held at 2 p m Sunday at Croley Funeral Home for MsSgt William Jerry Singleton. He died May 27 at Homestead AFB Fla after 21 years in the air force with tours in Germany Shreveport Texarkana Roswell Ga and Georgia. Interment Morris Cemetery Pritchett. Pallbearers will be the military escort.
In a long session the Gladewater Municipal Hospital board approved a memorial fund and the first auxiliary bylaws, heard the auditor report showing a 1974 75 loss of 1186 000 due to doctor retirement and Medicare cost issues, and viewed a presentation by Sinclair Wright architects on expanding offices by converting rooms into four semi private patient rooms with an estimated 80 100 thousand dollars in costs.
The EPA will reimburse Gladewater an additional 13 100 for sewer plant improvements, part of a total federal grant package that now stands at 154 520. The city had 327 216 in eligible costs and was due half reimbursement by law, with funds delayed until now.
The United Fund Youth Recreation Program runs weekdays 9:30 to 11:30 from June 9 to July 18 for kindergartners through eighth graders at the Maple Street high school track. Activities include tumbling, sports, relays, and motor development with ribbons for final-day winners.
At a special meeting the city council approved adding 32000 curb feet to the Gay Ave paving job. The south side curb from Chevy Chase to 400 feet west of the Southwestern Bell building will drain toward a creek to prevent water damage. Easements are secured. E M Pierce of Texarkana will perform the curb and dirt work raising the south curb slightly to aid the storm sewer. Total project cost rises to 87350 dollars.
Gladewater Police Chief E. J. Jay Banks, 63 and a 40 year veteran, outlined a major reorganization to Rotarians. He pledged a professional corps, clear chain of command, new training, and standards while seeking city support and funds for equipment and higher salaries to attract qualified officers.

Gladewater officers nabbed two burglars in separate incidents. A juvenile was seized inside a local nightclub and handed to Gregg County authorities. Later, Wendell Lynn Brooks, 21, was caught inside K G Grocery on Upshur and charged with burglary. bond set at 3500 dollars.
