Explosion and Fire Hit Gilmer Auto Firm

An early morning blast and subsequent conflagration struck the Yazell Chevrolet Oldsmobile Company in Gilmer, wrecking the showroom and offices and heavily damaging five new cars while several others suffered severe damage.

Church league playoffs set at Bear Park Saturday

Four church league teams will compete at Bear Park on Saturday with First Methodist A facing Emmanuel Baptist A at 7 30 p m and First Christian meeting White Oak Missionary Baptist at 8 30 p m First Methodist A will vie for third place and Missionary Baptist for first and second as the regional tournament starts August 3. New City Barn Opens with Public Open House

The city invites the public to an open house on Tuesday August 1 from 9 30 to 11 30 a m at the rebuilt 1006 E Pacific Street Gregg County commissioners barn now housing the Water Sewer Street and Sanitation departments officers Roy Perryman and Matt Allen will host with refreshments by Pat Cowan and Stella Dickinson The old maintenance facility will be vacated and sold later to the site officials will showcase the 1500 square feet offices and 3600 square feet shops for inspection.

Maryland rites for J. E. Klohr

Graveside services for John Edgar Klohr are set for Monday at Ft. Lincoln Cemetery in Hyattsville Maryland. He died in a local hospital Thursday at 4 25 a m after a lengthy illness. Lloyd Funeral Home in Gilmer handled arrangements. He was 78 and lived at Lake Devernia. A Mason and Scottish Rite member, he is survived by wife Florence three daughters Thelma Williams June Thomas and Evandale Gunter a son William W. Martin six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
