Mrs. Ollie Tucker Rites Held For Local Resident

Mrs. Ollie Tucker 80 of 109 Tewery died on arrival at Good Shepherd Hospital after a sudden illness while visiting her son Dick Tucker. Funeral services were held at Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. Harry Hunt officiating. Burial followed in Friendship Cemetery under Malcolm Stone Funeral Home direction. Survivors include son Dick of Longview daughter Lucille Wood of Gladewater sisters Mary Lou McNutt and D A Porter granddaughters Barbara Teasley Wanda Bridges and Dickie Tucker pallbearers were her nephews.

Man eludes officers after sentencing in Gregg County

Authorities search for 44 year old George Frank Carlson who fled the Gregg County Courthouse after receiving a five year burglary sentence. Carlson, from Mt Pleasant with links to Gladewater, was last seen at 2 45 pm and is suspected dangerous with a life sentence from Linden and a hold by Dallas authorities. He is described as six feet tall, 160 pounds, brown hair, gray blue eyes, wearing a two tone gray suit.

Bear Bears grid football season schedule announced

Athletic Director Bill Waters revealed the football season timetable. High school players’ physicals start Wednesday August 9 at Bear Stadium at 7 p.m. The 9th grade physicals are Tuesday August 8 at Moser Clinic at 7:30 a.m. 8th graders’ physicals are Tuesday August 15 at Bear Stadium at 6:30 p.m. The first drills begin August 11 and pads go out August 18. The Bears face Gilmer’s Buckeyes on September 8 in Gilmer, with an Sept 7 home date for 8th and 9th graders.

SWEPCO to Build Coal Fueled Plant Near Cason Texas

SWEPCO announced a new coal fueled electric plant of 530000 kilowatts to be built two miles northeast of Cason Texas off State Highway 111. Site work begins 1973 with construction starting March 1974. The plant will use low sulphur sub-bituminous coal and be the firm’s largest generator.

Gladewater approves boat ramp contract with local firm

The City of Gladewater awarded an $18,153 contract to Zack Burkett of Graham for a public boat launch ramp near the Sabine River bridge on U S Highway 271. Work is expected to begin this week with contracts being finalized by city and Texas Parks & Wildlife officials. The ramp will include boat facilities and parking for 20 vehicles. The bid was reduced from $20,055 through negotiated work.
