Gladewater News Roundup Highlights Band Start and Events

Gladewater high school announces band practice begins Monday at 9 a.m. in the band hall led by director Buzz Messner. The issue notes participation in a Dallas Vocational Education Conference with teachers Mary Smith and Billie Johnster and remarks by Sen. Lloyd Bentsen on education. Also covered are the 1972 Yearbook of Agriculture Landscape for Living, a Disneyworld visit by Gladettes, a stray poodle captured by police, an upcoming Gladewater Boys Baseball Association meeting, and a fundraising effort for Mrs. Pearl Crump’s cancer treatment.

Pirkey retires as SWEPCO head and Stall named successor

H. W. Pirkey Jr after 46 years with Southwestern Electric Power Company retires as chairman and chief executive officer effective August 1. Lamar Stall becomes SWEPCO chief executive, having served as president since April 1971. Pirkey remains as consultant and director.

Glade men chosen for special honor

Two young Gladewater men, haberdasher David Holcombe and pharmacist Dale Barton, were chosen for inclusion in the 1972 Outstanding Young Men of America. Nominated earlier this year by Gladewater American Legion Post 281, they are recognized for professional and community leadership.

Lifeguard Saves 10 Year Old at Gladewater Pool

A 10 year old girl slipped into deep water at the Gladewater school pool and was revived by lifeguard Mary Jane Wiley. Wiley, 18, a Red Cross trained Water Safety Instructor and valedictorian, kept up CPR until hospital care. The child, Kathi Dockery, is out of danger after observation. Wiley’s swift action averted tragedy.

Memorial Church Rummage Sale Aids Russell Fenton

Memorial Baptist Church youth sponsor a rummage sale on Friday and Saturday August 11 12 at 114 S Main to aid Russell Fenton music director facing kidney transplant. Proceeds support medical expenses with donation pickups via phone numbers and at the Mirror office. Fenton from East Texas undergoes thrice weekly hemodialysis at Southwestern Dialysis Center Dallas awaiting transplant at Parkland Hospital.

Funeral services set for Evelyn Faulk of Clarksville City

Evelyn Faulk aged 65 died at 7 20 a m Wednesday in a local hospital after a short illness. Funeral services are pending with Malcolm Stone Funeral Home. She is survived by her husband Henry.

Mrs Smith Joins ETSU Faculty as Computer Science Instructor

Patricia Mayer Smith will join East Texas State University on September 1 as an instructor in Computer Science. She earned a B S in Computer Science in 1971 and a Master of Education in 1972 from Texas A&M, was active in campus clubs, and is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Gordon Mayer. The Smiths will move to Commerce at month’s end.

Gladewater School Board Seeks Bids for New Athletic Facility

In a special session the Gladewater school board reviewed plans from Gerald Foster for a 67 by 104 foot athletic field house at the school park corner of Tenery and Walton. They voted to advertise for bids with a bid opening set for Aug 17 at 7 p.m. The 7,400 square foot brick building includes dressing facilities for about 55 boys and a separate girls’ area, coaches offices, a whirlpool bath, trainer’s room, and permanent weight equipment. The project aims to provide modern sanitary facilities for athletes and staff.

In-service workshop dates announced for Gladewater

The schedule for the In- Service workshop for faculty members of the Gladewater school system has been released from the office of Superintendent Roy Johnson. The annual pre-school workshop for teachers will be announced in due course.

Union Grove to Open Registration on Aug 17

Union Grove Schools announce registration for students on Thursday August 17 from 8:30 a.m. to noon on an in service day. Buses run on regular schedule to bring students. First official day of school set for Monday August 21 with full cafeteria service and 180 student days planned.
