Brother of Mrs McPherson Dies at VA Hospital
Sidney Simmons brother of Marvin Simmons and Mrs A B McPherson died suddenly at the VA hospital in Big Springs Friday. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Odessa. He is survived by another sister Mrs Betty McAllister of Roswell NM and three other brothers Garland Odessa Bill Austin and Walter Lee McAlexander Plainview.

The Gladewater celebration unfolds Saturday with a Centennial Hospitality Center opening at the Chamber of Commerce Building at 10 a.m. a cake cutting at 2 p.m. a press reception at 2:30 and a downtown parade at 8 p.m. Events continue Sunday with religious observances and a massed choir service followed by a rodeo talk by Dr. Tom Haggai. Monday brings Youth Day activities at Jaycee Park and a bike marathon with various games and a noon lunch.

Gladewater hosts the first Centennial Coronation Ball at the high school patio Saturday from 8 to midnight. The Centennial queen will be revealed around 10 PM during the coronation. Gladewater resident James E. Arp 21 was shot once in the chest at a local motel room and underwent heart surgery at Good Shepherd Hospital in Longview. Jimmie Lois Baker 22 was charged with assault to murder, arraigned, and held on $10,000 bond after authorities pursued a motel area fugitive.
