Union Rejects General Telephone Contract Offer

Communications Workers of America and General Telephone Company of the Southwest rejected the offered contract in full. They cited inadequate wage increases, retrogression in benefits, a three year term with a wage reopener, and inequities for female workers. Talks resume Thursday as negotiations continue on classifications, rates, and benefits.

Gladewater introduces its first import repair shop at 504 W Upshur as Leonard Teffteller and his sons Maxie and Ronald study local demand before expanding. State Board of Education approved a record Available School Fund allotment for 1971 72 totaling nearly 302 486 800 to Texas public schools. Aid equals 121 90 per student for 2 479 400 pupils last year with actual enrollment over 2 7 million. Funds come from Permanent School Fund earnings and taxes with textbooks set aside first.

Gladewater Hospital Board Reviews Audit and Appointments

President James Gelvin led the Gladewater Municipal Hospital board meeting as the audit report was submitted for study. An auditor will discuss the report at the August meeting. New officers include John Osteen as vice president and secretary treasurer and H S McAfee as secretary. The building committee report, once chaired by Gelvin, highlighted committee recommendations. City Negotiates for Precinct 2 Property

City council in special session with Gregg County Commissioner Bill Owens discussed buying the precinct two county barn site. Owings will vacate under redistricting. Negotiations stalled over asking price of 7500 dollars. city already owns the land and would gain covered equipment space and expanded shop facilities.

Longview Kiwanis Club aims to sponsor a Gladewater unit. Local leaders contact Bill Rice or Jerrell Huffman to recruit members while county officials negotiate a county site purchase and fence transfer.
