Sulphur Springs officials monitor water use and consider rationing measures amid rising demand. Council will watch the level closely before deciding on next steps.
Alvin C. Grandpa Baker longtime area resident died Friday in a local nursing home after a lengthy illness. Funeral Sunday at Emmanuel Baptist Church with burial at Judson Cemetery. Survived by two daughters five sons grandchildren great grandchildren and a great great granddaughter.
At a regular session the City council approved a 21.14 acre land purchase from the Carter Estate for 62.50 per acre to lengthen the municipal airport runway from 2,650 to 3,200 and toward 4,000 feet. The panel also addressed zoning, SWEPCO rate study, and mobile home displacement concerns from 1202 Shepperd Drive.
The Upshur City Council voted 4 to 1 to allow a mobile home to remain on its lot after confirming the unit meets city spacing rules. The session also opened the sole bid for Sabine River boat ramp at $20,077.55, with negotiations planned to fit the $18,000 cap and possible wood pile pier removal.
The First State Bank reports June 30 deposits at 11,178,451.10 up from 10,219,625.29 last year while loans rise about 185,000. Gladewater Federal Savings & Loan says deposits reach 13,299,984.52 with six month loan growth of 1,186,409 and mortgage loans totaling 10,963,768.51.
