Mrs. Larry Virginia Smith underwent major skull base aneurysm surgery Wednesday at St. Pauls Hospital in Dallas. She is in intensive care at noon and will stay several days after hospital tests earlier in the week. The report notes prior tests at a local facility and transfer to Dallas on Friday.
The Gladewater Reach Team meets at St. Mark's parish house to finalize the Virginia Harris Benefit Coffee Break set for Saturday. Events include a downtown Gladewater parade starting at 1 p.m., free coffee and cake, games, door prizes, and trophies for Best Sportsmanship with proceeds aiding Virginia Harris's medical expenses.
In Gregg County Texas the Republican nominee Gerald Connell protested to the commissioners court against hiring Tom Welch as an investigator for the District Attorney's office. Welch is the Democratic nominee for Sheriff. Connell urged the court to reconsider the action. The court also approved pay raises for Deputy Sheriff Jim Amos and for 60 reserve sheriffs. The court accepted party lists of judges and alternates for the general election.
The Gladewater school board approved employment of seven teachers at its July meeting. A new speech therapist, Carol Sue Martin, will aid 100 students with speech and hearing issues. Other hires include Garland Erwin Clay as social studies and tennis minded educator, Darlene McLaughlin in science at Middle School, and Sharon Ann Guthrite at Middle School, with background links to Pine Tree High and Stephen F. Austin University.
Gladewater school officials report extensive summer work including Bear Stadium seating and painting at about 10000 dollars. Repairs to the high school gym floor dressing rooms hallways and rest rooms are nearly done. Classroom carpetings at Gay Ave and a major Broadway auditorium remodel are underway. Open type classroom space for about 100 students is planned with ceiling lowered and stage left intact. Two walk in cold storage vaults recently completed under maintenance supervisor Sammy Price.
Prayer notes provided. Johnson reports county dirt work finished on the practice field. The field may be used this year for football and band practice once grass covers bare spots. Food commodities for the cafeteria are stored locally under federal distribution.
Chamber directors heard Royce Ford report that July 4 activities at Lake Gladewater were real successful. The Little Miss Lake Gladewater contest drew 12 entries and was a popular event. Firefighters patrolled the lake during the fireworks show watched by hundreds. The two tennis tournaments drew strong crowds, and Dairy Queen opened in nearby Big Sandy. The East Texas Vacation Guide full page color ad will cost sponsors 1375 dollars and aims to boost inquiries about the city.
Jacksonville's Tops in Texas 10th annual rodeo opens Wednesday night at 8 15 and runs through Saturday July 15. The Hee Haw stars perform nightly with Cajun Kid as clown and Tommy Steiner supplying stock from Austin. Tom Hadley calls the action among bull riding bareback saddle bronc riding steer wrestling calf roping and ladies barrel racing. Tickets available at the gate.
