The Gladewater 1873 1973 centennial book has gone to press with 162 pages plus cover. Editors thank sponsors contributors and especially Ron Clark for photography layout and final assembly as the July 28 sales date nears.

Regional TAAF tourney opens at Gladewater courts Thursday

The Regional TAAF tournament begins Thursday at Gladewater High School courts with 84 entrants from Lufkin Hughes Springs Longview Palestine Tyler and Gladewater across 125 events. Competition runs July 19 to 21 with start times listed for each event and venue in the 700 block of North Tenery Street.

Puppet Show at Gladewater Public Library

A puppet show is scheduled Tuesday afternoon at the Gladewater Public Library from 1 to 2 p.m. The event invites all young people to attend. Clara Lou Hogue chairs the group of puppeteers who attended the Northeast Texas Library Service Puppet Clinic in Tyler and created their own puppets. This is one of several upcoming summer activities for youths.

Gladewater Pageant Call to Practice at Middle School

The notice invites residents to join the Gladewater pageant efforts at the Middle School auditorium. Practice runs 7 p.m. Monday through Friday with a strict 30 minute limit per session. Participants are encouraged to join for a rewarding experience.

Randy Sharp Wounded in Accidental Neighborhood Shooting

A 10-year-old boy, Randy Sharp, was critically injured by a single blast from a .410 shotgun in a local residential area. He was treated at Good Shepherd Hospital in Longview and later transferred to Parkland Hospital in Dallas for surgery. Police say the discharge was accidental. family members appeal for blood donations at Stewart Blood Bank in Tyler in his name.

Centennial Religious Heritage Day to Feature Dr Tom Haggai

Renowned radio commentator Dr Tom Haggai will speak at the Centennial Religious Heritage Day on Sunday July 29 at 8 p.m. in the Round-up Rodeo arena with a Centennial choir directed by Melvin Marshall. The program includes a Hymn of Our Time by John Ness Beck and two rehearsals on July 22 and July 29.

Old hospital sold to become apartments in Gladewater

The Leake Clinic and Hospital at the Dean and Glade Streets intersection was sold to Scott Hahlen 40 who plans to convert the building into about nine one bedroom and fifteen single room apartments. He hopes first units are ready before August 1 with rents around 15 to 30 dollars weekly. Hahlen and his family recently moved from Florida seeking a quieter East Texas setting. The 1934 built structure formerly Hotel Day was a hospital from 1952 to 1965 under Dr Bain Leake.

Boomers Take Over Library Centennial Exhibits Arrive

Gladewater celebrates its Centennial with monthly exhibits at the public library. Boomers replace hoop skirted belles showcasing 1930s oil boom items, old newspapers, magazines, clothes, tools, and memorabilia. Citizens urged to bring photos and artifacts for display during Centennial Week July 28 to August 4.
