Joy Parrish, LAWNDALE, Calif., holds a 5000 plus wooden coin collection begun in 1948 after her husband’s gift. She travels widely with the International Organization of Wooden Money Collectors, exhibits work, has won over 100 awards, and traces wooden money to early Greek British and Oriental times, noting bamboo money in 1700s to 1930s China and Sitka spruce scripts in 1931. Her tours include Sambo’s Restaurants wooden nickels offering coffee, though prices rose. Collectors trade duplicates at California meetings and auctions, aiming for one piece from every location.
