Gladewater resumes eight day Centennial celebration starting July 28 with Brotherhood Day and Merchant and Industry Day added. Key events include Coro nation Day July 28, Religious Heritage Day July 29, Youth Day July 30, Ladies Day July 31, Pioneer Homecoming August 1, Merchants and Industry Day August 2, Brotherhood Day August 3, and Gladewater 200 Day August 4 with a time capsule and multiple performances. Bill Wagner serves as general chairman with Leon Kapchinsky, Rick Sadler, Ann McKenzie, B P Dake, Jack Elrod, Royce Ford, and David Holcombe as other organizers.

Gladewater All Stars to Be Announced July 9

Gladewater Boys Baseball Association will name its all star teams for Pee Wee and Junior leagues on Monday night July 9 after the final game. Pony and Mustang rosters follow later. All stars compete in a July 19 20 21 tournament at Kilgore in a double elimination format.

Sharon Shrine Mounted Patrol wins honors at Shrine meet

Sharon Shrine Temple of Tyler tied for first in Mounted Patrol at the Shrine Imperial Session in Atlanta. Hellas Temple of Dallas edged Sharon by one third of a point in the drill event as about 22 patrols rode in the parade. East Texas riders from Gladewater and Gregg County Sheriff Tom Welch joined onlookers in noting the Texas team’s prowess.

Natowa Camp Welcomes Mexican Girls From Mexico City

Indictments handed up in Upshur County shooting case

Upshur County grand jury indicted Don Ray Wilson 20 of Gladewater for murder with malice in the June 26 shooting death of Jim Henry Mitchell Jr. 22 of Big Sandy. Also charged were Jerald Bynum 23 and Cathy Sheehan for assault with intent to rob Wilson on the same date.

City Water Plant Responds to Rising Demand

Water use rose to measurable rainfall as the city reports a worker found at the filtration plant. Lake Gladewater remains turbid with water about three inches below spillway level. City consumption runs around 1.5 million gallons daily and the plant operates 24 hours for treatment and filtration.

Highway projects delayed in Texas funding dispute

AUSTIN The Texas Highway Department canceled the July 24 25 monthly contract letting for 18 highway projects due to Congress failing to approve a Federal-Aid highway bill. State Highway Engineer B L DeBerry cited the adjournment and ongoing conference committee disputes over highway funding as the reason. The department had used state funds with reimbursement hoped later under an interim action.
