SWEPCO Plans $44 Million Construction Drive in 1971

SWEPCO announces a 1971 budget of 44 million dollars with about 32 million for Texas facilities expansion and improvement. The plan includes new turbine generator units at Wilkes Power Plant and Knox Lee Power Plant, 345000 kilowatts each, operation in 1972 and 1974 respectively, plus major transmission line and substation work across East Texas and surrounding areas.

John P. Tallent Named Outstanding Young Man of 1970

Local contractor John Paul Tallent has been chosen as one of America's Outstanding Young Men of 1970 and will be featured in the 1970 volume of Outstanding Young Men of America. White Oak Plans Banquet To Honor Roughnecks

Gay Avenue School Superintendent Contract Renewed by Board

Superintendent Roy Johnson had his contract renewed for three years by the Gay Avenue School Board. Effective July 1, 1970, the term runs to June 30, 1974. Johnson has 23 years with the district and five as superintendent, guiding new vocational programs and an integrated school transition.

Pantsuits Move Into Classrooms At Gladewater Schools

The Gladewater Public School System votes to allow coordinated pantsuits for teachers auxiliary staff and students except on Fridays when jeans sweatshirts and other casual wear remain allowed. The policy sets grooming standards and defines pant suit requirements including tunic length tops and coverage. Local Squadron aids F-111 search and memorial services

Major Richard Herbst announced seven planes and 50 men joined Sunday's search for the missing F-11 jet. Fifteen volunteers from a 19-member squadron flew East Texas routes from Texarkana to Gilmer and Gladewater. Funeral services for Mrs. Iva Lou Stracener were held Monday for the Upshur County native, with burial in Memorial Park and survivors listing three daughters, three sons, a sister, and numerous grandchildren.
