The children of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Leroy Thomas Sr honor their parents with a tea for their fiftieth wedding anniversary. The event is Sunday afternoon from 2 to 5 at 501 W Brookwood Lane White Oak. Friends are invited to attend.
SWEPCO announces a 1971 budget of 44 million dollars with about 32 million for Texas facilities expansion and improvement. The plan includes new turbine generator units at Wilkes Power Plant and Knox Lee Power Plant, 345000 kilowatts each, operation in 1972 and 1974 respectively, plus major transmission line and substation work across East Texas and surrounding areas.

Local contractor John Paul Tallent has been chosen as one of America's Outstanding Young Men of 1970 and will be featured in the 1970 volume of Outstanding Young Men of America. He receives an Award Certificate and will have a biography published alongside other 1970 award winners. Tallent leads in the Gladewater Chamber of Commerce and Jaycees, where he serves as president.
White Oak High School will host its annual football banquet on Saturday January 16 at 7 30 p m in the WOHS cafeteria. East Texas humorist Bob Murphey will speak and Coach Andy Griffin will present the Roughneck of the Year award plus certificates for outstanding play and add the recipient to the school’s trophy display.
Superintendent Roy Johnson had his contract renewed for three years by the Gay Avenue School Board. Effective July 1, 1970, the term runs to June 30, 1974. Johnson has 23 years with the district and five as superintendent, guiding new vocational programs and an integrated school transition.
The Gladewater Public School System votes to allow coordinated pantsuits for teachers auxiliary staff and students except on Fridays when jeans sweatshirts and other casual wear remain allowed. The policy sets grooming standards and defines pant suit requirements including tunic length tops and coverage. Principal Charles Hopson outlines a progress report on the ungraded learning approach at Gay Avenue School through fifth grade.
Major Richard Herbst announced seven planes and 50 men joined Sunday's search for the missing F-11 jet. Fifteen volunteers from a 19-member squadron flew East Texas routes from Texarkana to Gilmer and Gladewater. Funeral services for Mrs. Iva Lou Stracener were held Monday for the Upshur County native, with burial in Memorial Park and survivors listing three daughters, three sons, a sister, and numerous grandchildren.

Mid term activities bring a four day holiday for students with no classes Friday January 15 and in service training January 18 19 and 20 for teachers. Regular classes resume January 21 for the second semester.
The Texas Highway Commission reduced the hourly maintenance work week from 45 to 40 hours effective March 1 to align with salaried staff. The move follows a long studied plan to establish a uniform 40-hour week without pay cuts, and implements that broader proposal.
