UF Officers Elected After One Of The Most Successful Drives

After a strong United Fund drive UF elected officers for 1971. Bill Langford named president with Don Earp first vice president and Dale Barton second vice president. New directors include Bill Wagner and Jimmy Caldwell. Several members reelected to terms through 1972 74 75. Also noted are budget and benevolent fund committee appointments and a memorial service for James Sidney Henry.

Banker Rancher Dolph Briscoe to Address Gladewater Banquet

Dolph Briscoe, 48, noted south Texas businessman banker and rancher, will be the principal speaker at the Gladewater Chamber of Commerce banquet on March 25. A Uvalde native and UT graduate, Briscoe has been active in ranching, agriculture, banking, and state politics. He served in World War II in the CBI.

Police Rescues Driver From Oncoming Train In Gladewater

Early Sunday Gladewater Police saved a Tyler man after a stalled car on the railroad tracks triggered a near miss with an eastbound train. Officers blocked the crossing with flashing lights while the engineer stopped the train just before Money Street. Police also tackled weekend burglaries and disturbances including a burglary at The Bottle Shop on Hwy 80 with multiple liquor and cigarette items taken.

Full Slate of Candidates Seeks City Council Posts

Local builder John Paul Tallent filed this week as a candidate for the last open city council seat. Incumbents Melvin Jenkins J. B. Poston and James Walker filed for re election for another two year term. A E Pappy Shipp filed for election to the council for a one year unexpired term after being appointed to succeed Quentin Abernathy who resigned last August. Filing deadline is March 1 for the April 6 city election.

Chamber Banquet details outlined at luncheon

Board members reviewed plans for the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet set for March 25 at 7 p.m. in the Middle School cafeteria. Dolph Briscoe of Uvalde will be principal speaker as committees reported progress on arrangements, memberships, and community projects.

Glade Man Jailed on Assault Charges

Gladewater resident Gerald Lynn Lacy, 32, held in Gregg County jail on two counts of aggravated assault with bonds totaling 4000 after a Saturday incident at a Quitman Street home left Mr and Mrs Aswell Jones badly beaten. Police also charged him with drunk and disorderly conduct. Joneses in Municipal Hospital listed as in satisfactory condition.

YOU Program for City's Young People Expands Efforts

Members of the Youth Opportunities Unlimited committee met in Jeter Hall to map new city youth programs. They discussed funding for a screening of The Cross and the Switchblade, with 75 cents of the $1.25 admission underwritten for 1,000 Gladewater students, transportation by school buses, and a 50 cent student fee. Planned activities include a summer day camp directed by Michael Scott and Mrs. Norman Glickman, a Little League inquiry, a city tennis and girls volleyball or kickball program, summer dramatics, teenage dances, park cleanups, and a summer job campaign. Officers include Mrs. Glickman and Bob Ullrich, with committees on Education and on Law Enforcement and Legislature.
