City officials schedule a public hearing March 2 at 2 pm to gather input on the 1977-78 federal revenue sharing funds. City secretary Rick Kuehler says about 160,260 is expected for the 1977-78 budget, versus 102,932 in 1976-77, with most funds aimed at capital projects.
A major wind caused outage in western Upshur County lasting about five and a half hours. The transmission cable was repaired by 10:30 a.m. and service returned to a large area.
A high speed pursuit on Melba Street ended when a Gladewater unmarked car collided with a Dodge. The driver fled after officers attempted arrest. a warrant was issued for a 20 year old Gladewater man with two juvenile females seen with him.
The City of Gladewater received 2671.77 in sales tax for the period ending Jan 28 1977. Statewide total collected was 7 232 087.55 with cities including Gilmer Longview Tyler and others receiving varied amounts.
Logan A. Ashby, son of Thomas N. and Wanda Ashby and a Gladewater High School senior, is a finalist in the 1977 National Merit Scholarship competition. Principal Mike Ogg and Math Chair Frank Setzler praise his achievements as he plans to study physics at Texas A and M University.
Thieves broke into the M. F. Valentine residence on Lake Gladewater's east side stealing family heirlooms including a 150‑year‑old Bible, a mother’s Bible, Mr. Valentine’s WWII Purple Heart and infantry badge, and a cedar chest lid. Interior vandalism reported as a cedar chest lid broken and over half the linens missing. Upshur County officers investigate. a prior fall break‑in yielded no theft.
Cecil Glenn Sinclair died after an altercation with Johnny Dow Stiner in Mineola. Stiner is jailed on a murder charge with a $50,000 bond as an autopsy awaits results. Funeral services for the 43 year old oilfield worker were held in Mineola with burial in New Hope Cemetery.
Delta-Fern Wisdom's School of Classic Ballet plans a Wednesday benefit in Ambassador College auditorium to aid Senior Citizens. Mrs. Gail Levy announced a Bachelor of Arts extension course from Ottawa University will be taught at Gladewater Municipal Hospital February 22 to 26 with cooperation from administrator Milton Borgano and assistant Paul Bennett. Instructors from the University and students from Texas Oklahoma Arkansas and Louisiana will attend.
Paul Pablo Marshall reports that Julian Rex Franklin, a fellow Gladeite and Gladewater High School graduate, has been named to a high post in Washington, D C. Franklin and Marshall are natives of Gladewater and former Gladeites now pursuing government service.
City officials say Gregg County crews will upgrade the road to the city owned Jaycee Park off Dorrough Road. The six acre park is being cleared and refurbished for picnics and playgrounds. about $700 has been raised by the local Jaycees with another $700 planned to complete the work by late April.
