Gladewater High School celebrates the class of 76 with a color photo in a 76 design by Curtis Bright and trophies in the school display case outside the assistant principal’s office. Administrators invite former students to visit and recall memories.
City reappraisal completed and will raise taxes for most property owners inside city limits. James Crook of Pritchard & Abbott outlined details to Lions and Rotary, noting a $50,000 firm fee for on site surveys and records. Hearings run March 7 to 11 with appointment slots in morning and afternoon.
B B Fields will retire from the staff of the First Baptist Church this month and be honored as B B Fields Day. He will sing a solo, the Irene Dillon Fields Memorial Handbells will be rung, and the Sanctuary Choir and Men's Chorus will perform as Richard Cavel shares a living proof testimony. The Rev Risinger will preach from Luke 9 57 62. Fields came to Gladewater sixteen and a half years ago as Minister of Music and Education and will continue religious work part time.
East Texas business leaders depart Dallas on March 6 for Washington with House Leader Jim Wright and Rep Sam B Hall Jr. They will attend a breakfast March 7 at the Madison Hotel and host a reception and dinner there as the Texas delegation and other dignitaries are invited. The trip, sponsored by the East Texas Chamber of Commerce, aims to strengthen ties with lawmakers during the 95th Congress.
The Sabine River crested at 25 feet in Gladewater with minor flooding reported as the fall begins Sunday. At Mineola the gauge hit 17.3 feet on Thursday and Longview expected a crest of 90 feet while Tatum anticipated 2.0 feet on Feb 22.
At a called meeting on Thursday the Gladewater Municipal Hospital board approved a loan from First State Bank to cover construction and equipment costs for the cardiopulmonary laboratory. The authority plans $596,000 in revenue bonds for a three phase expansion including a 20 bed addition, lab enlargement, and business office upgrades. Funds on deposit total $100,000 in CD at the same bank to back development phase financing. Upon sale, bond proceeds will repay the bank loan.
About 1,350 heard Roger Melone conduct Beethoven and Dvorak with Smetana Moldau and Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue performed by Ruth Walter. The concert celebrated a strong Texas reputation, with Walter praised for a flawless modern piece and a preconcert gourmet dinner.
The Ore City Rebels meet the Winona Wildcats in a Class A bi-district basketball match at Gladewater High School gym on Tuesday night at 7. Tickets are $2 at the gate and the game is open to all basketball fans.
