Eye-Opener James Cowan to Start at Tech QB Next Season

James Cowan, the 6-1, 195-pound sophomore who led the Bears in 1969, is likely to start at quarterback for Louisiana Tech next season. He helped Tech beat Eastern Michigan 14-3 in the Pioneer Bowl and finished the year 9-2-0, with Wenford Wilborn emerging as a standout defensive back. Spring practice begins March 13.

Oscar Monk Rites Held in Gilmer

Funeral services were held for Oscar Lee Monk 51 at 2 p.m. in Gilmer with Jerry Shipp officiating. He died Thursday morning in Good Shepherd Hospital Longview. Burial was in West Mountain Cemetery. He was a World War I veteran and retired oil field worker. Survivors include his widow Iola two sons Thomas Lee and Samuel Ray Monk of Gladewater three daughters Mrs Kenneth Kedd Shreveport Mrs Clyde Stevens Vivian La and Mrs Charles Hill Gladewater three brothers Ed Joe Monk West Mountain and Robert Lee Monk Gladewater two sisters Mrs ail Moore West Mountain and Mrs Dora Attaway Odessa and six grandchildren.

The Memorial Baptist women's team defeated First United Methodist to claim third place while Memorial Baptist will face East Mountain Baptist for second place. The Mountaineers won the overall, and First Methodist men beat First Baptist for second place. Next Thursday at the Middle School gym First Baptist women, now in first, meet East Mountain women for the trophy. Church of Christ men face First United Methodist men for the league trophy. The opener starts at 7 pm.

Hospital Association meeting report from Austin discussed

Gladewater Municipal Hospital board members reported on the Texas Hospitals Association meeting in Austin during February. Topics included future financing with a rate board, Medicare and Medicaid as major purchasers, facility utilization, and duplication of equipment. An architect will visit Gladewater for building-proposal study as January bills were approved.

John Breashers Dies in Cave Inn Area

John Happy Breashers, 79, a Cave Inn and Gladewater resident for 40 years, died Thursday night at 10 40. Funeral services were held Saturday at 10 a.m. in Stone Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. G. A Stanfield officiating. Burial followed at Gladewater Memorial Park. A retired Humble Oil Company employee and World War I veteran, he was a member of Memorial Baptist Church. Survived by sister Mrs. Joe Tillman of Olney and nephew Jack Tillman of Wichita Falls.

Sixty one Junior High iris dismissed for dress code violations

The Sulphur Springs Junior High sanctioned sixty one students for dress code breaches. They were allowed to return after changing clothes to meet standards. The assistant principal noted many notices sent home cited inappropriate garb and emphasized school policy enforcement.
