TNHA honors area media at East Texas dinner

The East Texas Chapter of the Texas Nursing Homes Association honored more than 20 newspapers, radio and TV stations, including the Gladewater Mirror, at its annual dinner held Tuesday evening.

White Oak principal nominated for award in Texas

Judy Meredith principal of White Oak Elementary School earns a nomination for the Distinguished Library Service Award by the Texas Association of School Administrators. Lucille Clark, White Oak librarian, filed the nomination on February 1. The winner will be named at the Texas State Teachers Association convention in Fort Worth.

Chamber of Commerce selects 1976 77 officers and directors

The Longview Chamber of Commerce approved a new slate for 1976 77 at a luncheon. Elected were Jack Earp as president Buzz Long first vice president Virgil Wallace second vice president Kirk Abercrombie third vice president Roy Leggitt treasurer with Roy Johnson as immediate past president. Directors re elected included Curtis Bright Hugh Camp Jack Elrod Jim Holcomb Roy Johnson Gary Kizer Ames Lawrence Ernest A Martin Julius Bud Morse Malcolm Stone Buzz Long and Allen Rich. The group discussed the East Texas Vacation Guide distribution plans and upcoming events including the old fashioned tasting bee on Feb 17 and the ribbon cutting for Petal Pusher florist.

Beavers Named Vice President at Hunt Oil Company

James W. Beavers Jr. of Dallas elected vice president land at Hunt Oil Company. Beavers, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Beavers Sr., joins Hunt Oil in 1952 and has led nine district land offices from Dallas since 1957. Ray L. Hunt announces his value to the team as the company expands oil and gas exploration.

Gladewater Rescue Unit Eyes Hydraulic Jaws Purchase

Gladewater plans to acquire hydraulic jaws to speed car extrications after a Lee Drive wreck where a man endured 45 minutes trapped in his truck. The group will fund 500 dollars upfront and seek 5,000 more from donations, with Kilgore Rescue Unit as the only nearby peer and a demonstration planned in Gladewater.

GTE Adds LOI New Phones Here in 1975

One hundred and one new customers were added to the Gladewater telephone system during 1975 bringing total customers to 2,873. The total telephones rose 194 to 4,395 instruments with a forecast of 85 new customers in 1976. The next central office switch addition is set for February next year as facilities exist to meet growth per Don Bishop division manager General Telephone Company of the Southwest.

New 12-Unit Apartment Complex Underway on Chestnut Street

John Paul Tallent, building contractor, has begun work on a 12 unit apartment complex on Chestnut Street off Rodeo. Six units will stand on each side of the street. Workmen cleared the site for several weeks and some apartments have already been verbally leased.

Scout Campout and Family Night Events in Gladewater

Boy Scout troops 192 and 194 plan a two night campout on Broadway School playground February 6 7 8 to celebrate Boy Scout Month. Gladewater Masonic Lodge invites parents and friends to visit. CBS chapter hosts a covered dish family night Friday at 7 pm in the lodge hall. Evangelist Bill Hayes and Naomi Hayes lead meetings at First Assembly of God Church seven pm nightly through Sunday on Longview highway in Clarksville City.

Wednesday rites for Mrs. Hill in Gladewater church

Funeral services for Mrs. F. Hill were held at 2 30 p m Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with Dr Carlos Davis officiating. Burial followed at Gladewater Memorial Park. Hill lived in Gladewater 45 years died after a lengthy illness born 1895 in Algers Indiana moved here 1931 during oil boom. She taught in the church school led the Methodist Women and choir. Tammy Jo Welker born January 26 at Good Shepherd Hospital Longview weighed 4 6, parents Bobby Walker and Tammy Jo Welker Grandparents listed. Paintings by Helen Thomas to hang at Tyler bank February 9 17. Crescent City star Pat Penton noted for football achievements.
