Sabine River Falls Slowly in Gladewater Area

The Sabine River measured 31.70 feet Friday morning, down from 33.05 feet 24 hours earlier, indicating a slow fall in the Gladewater Longview area. Flooding remains in lowland areas with river crest at 41.35 feet last week, above the 26 foot flood stage.

Malcom Verner Dies After Long Illness at 61

Malcom E. Verner aged 61 died Thursday at the Veterans Hospital in Shreveport after a five month illness. Funeral services set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Quitman and Center Streets Church of Christ, with Murphy Phillips officiating. Burial at Gladewater Memorial Park. Survived by wife Valda Irene, two sons C of Nacogdoches and Malvin of Marshall, daughter Barbara Davis of Hallettsville, five sisters Lillian Shipes Houston, George Pendley Humble, Harold Gibbons, Paul Easterling, J. D Heath all of Gladewater, two brothers Kenneth Houston and Carlin Verner of Gladewater. Pallbearers were church elders and deacons. Verner, a World War II Navy SeaBees veteran (1941-45), was a Church of Christ member.

Two Suspects Arrested for Grade Burglary

Two male suspects from Longview and Kilgore were arrested Thursday night in Longview and charged in the December 13 burglary of Walkers Pharmacy. Chief Oris Morrow said they were brought before City Judge Jack Finley, bond set at 1.4 thousand each, and released after posting bond. The arrests followed a Gladewater felony warrant.

Carnation plant sets new all time evaporated milk record

Sulphur Springs plant produced its one millionth case of evaporated milk for 1971 after loading 713 railroad cars since the start of the year. Retired manager R S Plummer noted the facility approached the million case level in World War II but did not reach it.

Sam A Moore wins Tyler Art League Painting of the Year

Gladewater businessman Sam A. Moore received the Tyler Art League Painting of the Year prize for Leaning Tree Lodge at the group's Christmas dinner in Tyler. The top entry was chosen by popular vote from yearly Painting of the Month honorees. Moore, a hobby painter, studies with area instructors and works at a furniture store.

Austrian gains UN top post in surprise secret vote

Kurt Waldheim of Austria won the seat after three rounds of Security Council balloting, beating 11 other candidates. He will be the UN secretary-general starting January 1, succeeding U Thant whose two terms were acclaimed by the General Assembly. Waldheim called for full member state support and loyal Secretariat collaboration to continue the predecessor's path.

Funeral services for Mrs Marie Smith

Funeral services for 73 year old Mrs Marie Smith were held Friday at 10 am in Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Richard Ames officiating. Burial followed in Memorial Park. A Gladewater resident for six years she died Wednesday after a short illness in a local hospital. She was a member of the Worldwide Church of God. She is survived by son W B Smith of Las Vegas and granddaughter Mrs Sharon Doss of Dallas. Members of the Worldwide Church of God served as pallbearers.

Gladewater Library Qualifies for State System Membership

Gladewater Public Library is among 31 Texas libraries in a 43 county area qualifying for membership in a new state library system to be organized in 1972 under the 1969 Texas Library Systems Act. An $8,900 grant will fund the Dallas based system.
