Holiday lights glow across town with starry displays

Neighbors enjoy a festive city tour featuring a life size Santa at Hart Clinic Hospital a giant tree carollers and candy cane poles. Homes on Monte Carlo and Jeanette Tenery glow with red lights while St Marks Church collects clothing food and toys for a family of six. Funeral services were held for a brother in law of Leslie Moore in Doniphan Missouri. Mr and Mrs Melvin Jenkins celebrate their 48th Christmas wedding anniversary on Christmas day with belated birthday wishes to James Bo Patterson publisher.

Loop 485 project gains cautious support from governor

Four Gladewater officials led by City Manager Tony Williams met with Gov. Dolph Briscoe and Luther Deberry in Austin to present data on the Loop 485 plan. Briscoe asked for maps and cost figures but gave no commitments while noting funds shortages. The city has invested over 131 thousand dollars in right of way and pipelines, and the 1.5 mile south segment is partly funded with plans for the north segment. The loop is seen as key to regional development and improved traffic flow, with potential federal aid under urban program. Deberry praised ROW efforts and pledged a fresh funding look.

Jones rites held Friday

Funeral services for L. E. Casey Jones 71 were held Friday at 2 o'clock in Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Rev. David Crosby officiating. Burial was in Rock Springs Cemetery. Jones died Wednesday at 7 am at M D Anderson Hospital Houston. He was a Gladewater resident 22 years a truck driver for T E Mercer Co and Memorial Baptist Church member. Survivors include his widow Dixie three daughters Mary Sue Marjorie Jones and Frankie Rushing two sons James Choate Esley Jones a brother Jessie Jones two sisters Ida Lewis and Thennie Sides and five grandchildren.

City Sales Tax Receipts Jump This Year

City Financial Director Rick Kuehler reports a sharp rise in sales tax receipts through November, totaling 91,340.90 for the year. A November check of 21,277.43 brought the year’s total past 90 thousand, with December funds pending from the state. Through November 1975 the total was 86,245.70, making this year’s November total 5,095.20 higher than last year.

Glade Community Choir to Present Christmas Benefit

The Gladewater Community Choir will host a Christmas special on Thursday December 23 at 7 30 p m at New Hope Baptist Church to aid needy families. Funds clothing and food will be collected from attendees and distributed by local churches.

City Budget Talks Set for 1977-78 Preparations

City Manager Tony N Williams will meet with department heads next week to begin discussions for the 1977-78 budget. Budget workshops for the city council are planned for early January to acquaint members with budgetary responsibilities and seek solutions before the final draft.

Methodists plan Chrismon service in Gladewater church

The First United Methodist Church in Gladewater prepares a 15 foot cedar Chrismon tree decorated with 420 white lights and handmade white and gold Chrismons. The symbols reflect Christ and were inspired by a 1957 Danville church example.

Gladewater Firms Plan Christmas and New Year Holiday

Gladewater businesses announce closures for the holiday period. First State Bank will not transact on December 24 and 31, staying open until 5 30 p m on both days. City offices close at 5 p m on December 23 and 30 and reopen December 28 and January 4. The post office will operate 8 a m to noon on December 24 and year end, with normal hours on December 26 and January 3.

Hearings Held On Block Grant Request In City

Public hearings were held on December 15 and 17 to gather input for a Community Development Block Grant pre-application from HUD. City aims to renew funding. $150,000 already approved for low income areas. Bids on the grant expected after year start.
