Tachographs On Gladewater Buses Add Safety Edge

Gladewater school district adds Argo Tachographs to five of its 25 buses, with two new buses to be equipped. The seven day charts record speed, idling, braking, distance and time of day, and are tamperproof. District officials cite driver training and accident defense benefits, noting Fort Worth uses them on all buses.

Lake Gladewater to again accept Christmas tree donation

Board member Paul Bennett announced that trees will be submerged in the lake this year per Texas Parks and Wildlife guidance. Donors should place trees where city trash trucks can collect them after the holidays, avoid flocked or painted trees, and use a site near the city boat dock.

Gladewater police warn merchants to beware of checks from Anderson Engineering & Construction Co as forgeries. Sgt. Bill Brown says stolen checks surfaced after July 29 and have hit the area three times since Nov. 29. He notes a ring of at least five people, two women involved in the latest Dec. 1 liquor store case, and a 1975 black Mercury linked to the scheme. James London Reese, 34, of Longview, was arrested Nov. 29 in connection with passing a check.

School board weighs Gay Avenue expansion options

The board reviewed two plans for Gay Avenue Elementary extending facilities and explored temporary structures for 1977 78. Supt Roy Johnson won authorization to study feasibility and report at February meeting while members debated building a new high school versus expanding existing buildings.

Julius H Buckner 58 died December 11 after prolonged illness at East Texas Chest Hospital. A WWII veteran born in Fairfield, he was a Memorial Baptist Church member. Funeral at Malcolm Stone Chapel with Rev. David Crosby. interment in Gladewater Memorial Park. He leaves a widow Rose and ten grandchildren among a large extended family.

Chamber directors outline holiday plans and rodeo event

Chamber of Commerce directors at a GHS cafeteria luncheon reviewed Christmas parade results with 75 entries and about 3000 spectators. Buzz Long noted lighting upgrades planned for next year and Royce Ford announced a full color page ad in the East Texas Vacation Guide. The Round Up Rodeo set for June 8 to 11 and stamps for mail outs were shown by Garland Ferguson. The next meeting is January 11.

T. A. Burns Dies in Louisiana Rites Set

Thomas A. Burns 86 died Tuesday in a local hospital. Funeral services are scheduled Thursday at 10 a.m. in Delhi Louisiana at Kiddee Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bowman officiating. Interment will follow at Delhi City Cemetery. Survivors include his widow Angie Lee Burns two daughters Mrs Iler Roberts and Mrs Clotese Byrd two sons Ladisa and William Ray eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Local arrangements are by Malcolm Stone Funeral Home. Burns was born August 28 1890 in Webster Parish Louisiana and was a retired farmer member of the Baptist Church.
