In 1971 more than 50 members of Gilmer's First Baptist Church traveled to northwest New Mexico to construct a medical clinic at Tinian, conduct revivals and Bible schools, and teach music and auto mechanics. A Navajo rug, presented by Rev. David McKenzie, will hang in Gilmer as thanks from the tribe. TYLER oil field welcomes its first woman roughneck Claudine Shapely of Tyler who leaves a legal stenography career to work on a rig in Northern Louisiana.
The city council approved a compromise rate increase for General Telephone Company of the Southwest to take effect February 16 next year. Richard Johnson of Broadway Intermediate School gained national attention by reaching the National Football League punt pass and kick finals in San Francisco, where his Texas championship is noted for ages nine.
Funeral services were held for Benjamin Rowe 83 of Route 1 at Gilmer Croley Funeral Chapel with burial at Sunset Memorial Park. Survivors include Myrtle Rowe two sons and seven grandchildren. Also, funeral services for Lula Letha Warren 93 of Gladewater were held at Malcolm Stone Funeral Home with burial at Gladewater Memorial Park. Warren had lived in Gladewater for 30 years and Mississippi native.
A devotional prayer emphasizes loving others as Christ loves, recalling I John 4:19. The prayer asks guidance to remember that what affects the neighbor also affects the believer, ending with an Amen.
Kilgore celebrated its 100th year with John Ben Shepperd delivering the principal address at a Rotary Lions luncheon and dedicating a state historical marker at the site of the world famous "richest acre" investment. He traced East Texas pioneer life from frontier days to Kilgore's oil boom era and future prospects.
Buck Eagle Sharp hosts a free Christmas party for children under 15 next Saturday night in the former Faith Tabernacle building West Pacific beside the railroad. Entertainment includes western acts and a pony giveaway to one lucky attendee. The organizer has donated over 80 ponies in 2.5 years.
The recent revenue sharing disbursement spreads to White Oak with 24369 dollars Clarksville City 4217 Big Sandy 4059 and Warren City 1311 while Gladewater received 54838 dollars. All funds cover Jan 1 to Jun 30 1972 with more to come after year start.
