Insect Pests Threaten Southern Pine Forests
TAES entomologists led by Drs. Tom Payne and Bob Coulson study forest pests notably the southern pine beetle. In 1973 the beetle caused timber losses exceeding 103 million dollars and affected 58 percent of 85.5 million acres of susceptible pine in the southeast, with enough trees killed to build about 48,000 new homes. Research aims to develop better control methods.
