Hobby urges changes as Texas lawmakers face next session

Bill Hobby of Houston told the 24th annual County Treasurers' Association gathering in Longview that the January session will face many challenges. He warned of school financing changes, redistricting, auto insurance reform, and possible open vote for the Speaker, urging stronger county government and pay as you go fiscal safeguards.

Kilgore Plans Two Back to School Events

Gladewater Tennis Teams Fall in State Meet Quarters

Gladewater residents James Walker and Joyce Erickson were defeated 6-3 3-6 7-5 in the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation mixed doubles quarterfinals by a San Antonio duo at the Waco state meet. The event showcased top Texas amateurs and drew local spectators.

Water system earns state approval for Gladewater

Mayor C G Johnston received a Texas State Department of Health letter affirming Gladewater’s water supply holds a State Approved Water Supply status. A July 11 1972 sanitary survey by Kenneth Wheeler and Roy Perryman found the system excels in production storage and distribution and warrants continuation of the status. Virginia Lee Weathers 75 died Wednesday after a lengthy illness in Gladewater. Funeral services were held Saturday at Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with burial in Memorial Park. She lived at 214 Hull St and is survived by a sister Mrs Louise Custer and several nieces and nephews.

Kilgore College official outlines study programs

Dr. Charles F. Mathews, newly appointed executive vice president of Kilgore College, spoke to the Rotary Club about the college, its credit and non credit courses, and plans for a new science and engineering complex valued at about 1.5 million. He praised the faculty and noted KC credits transfer nationwide as enrollment rises.

East Texas State University sees record summer graduation

A record number of graduates were conferred at East Texas State University on Friday. The summer class included 450 bachelor degrees 552 master degrees and 21 doctorates. School boards approves base bid for athletic dressing facility

In a special meeting the board accepted an 83 900 base bid from T E Allen Construction Co of Jacksonville for a 7400 square foot all masonry building at the school park near the track. The 49100 plumbing and mechanical alternate was rejected to cut costs. Construction starts in about two weeks and should finish by January or February with separate facilities for about 110 boys and 15 to 20 girls including showers lockers weight room offices and a laundry.

Open House At Union Grove School To Meet New Leader

Union Grove patrons and the public are invited to an open house at the home economics cottage on Tuesday August 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. to meet new superintendent Robert Cooper and ten new teachers. Returning teachers and school board members with their wives will host. Refreshments will be served.
