Earp's Food Store owned by Mr and Mrs Jack Earp announces a grand opening sale this week. The firm was previously run by Mrs D C Earp who retired after 26 years in the grocery business. Established after World War II, the store grew from Quitman Street origin to a major local grocery firm in Gladewater.
Gladewater TARS plans a 10 30 a m double feature for family entertainment with Pufnstuf for kids and Airport for adults. Admission 25 cents, free tickets at local businesses, proceeds aid retarded in the area. Remodeling at Earps adds shelves, new displays, and expanded stock including Sara Lee pies and Borden dairy.
Robert Michael Mosley a Gladewater High School 1953 graduate died after a motorcycle crash on East Upshur near Broadway in Gladewater Tuesday night. He was to be buried at East Mountain Cemetery with Loyd Funeral Home handling arrangements. services set for Thursday at East Mountain Baptist Church.
Builders Joe Jones and Homer Hanes announce Glade Creek off East Lake Drive and West Gay Ave with 10 homes in the above average range and Sunny Acres off Hendricks near Rodeo Street with 34 homes priced 12000 to 16000 dollars. Work includes utilities, paved streets, and planned amenities such as a pool and tennis courts. First homes ready in about two months with construction starting soon under city policy using some municipal equipment. City permits show 26 new residences issued January 1 through July 31, 1971, dwarfing last year’s total. mortgage money fuels the surge.
Union Grove School officials received a Texas Education Agency ruling denying approval of 30 student transfers for the 1971 72 year. Three Gilmer ISD residents in East and West Mountain areas were affected while five seniors were exempted. The agency said approval would violate Civil Action No 5281.
A research grant of 75000 dollars was awarded to Stephen F. Austin University by the U S Army Corps of Engineers Fort Worth district to study environmental and cultural effects of a Trinity River channel project. Dr C R Voigel and Dr Russell C Faulkner lead the project with SFA faculty.
The Gladewater Day Care Center will open Monday with enlarged enrollment and will accept children under three for the first time. Director Mrs. Norman Glickman leads a non profit program at 415 West Marshall in the Presbyterian church.
Suzanne Black a Big Sandy piano voice teacher will present students in a formal recital Thursday night August 19 at 8 p.m. in the Gladewater High School auditorium. The public is invited with no admission charge. Jon Michael Doonan son of Mr and Mrs Bill Doonan entered Markham Hospital Longview Tuesday for surgery Wednesday morning.
Major Guy Smith of the Texas Department of Public Safety reminded drivers that a new school bus law takes effect August 30, requiring vehicles to stop when approaching a school bus stopped to load or unload children. Drivers must wait until the bus resumes motion or is signaled to proceed, or until flashing lights stop flashing.
Gladewater School system prompts new third through fifth graders to register and receive room assignments at Broadway School. Third graders from Gay Avenue proceed to the annex with names on room doors. fourth and fifth graders find names posted in main building. New students may register August 19 and 20 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the principal’s office or on Monday August 23.
