General Telephone to offer special calling period rates
General Telephone Company of the Southwest announces rate changes effective September 1 to reward customers who dial long distance calls within Texas. The plan lowers direct distance dialing rates while increasing charges for operator assisted calls and establishes new day evening night and weekend rate periods with reduced rates on certain holidays. A one minute initial rate applies from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. with additional per minute charges thereafter.

Two Men Plead Guilty to Area Burglaries
Patrick Lamar Winn, 25, of Longview, pleaded guilty to burglary of the Nelson Motor Company in Gladewater and received a three year probated sentence. James Leroy Spurger, of Kilgore, whose age is unknown, pleaded guilty to a Longview burglary and was given a new three year sentence after recent penitentiary release.

Upshur court ends appeals on highway rights of way
The Upshur County Commissioners Court voted to rescind previous orders to appeal three rights of way condemnation awards on U S Highway 271 to satisfy State Highway Department requirements for completed litigation and the department's share in costs. Earlier appeals were ordered for 13 tracts when awards exceeded the department’s original appraisals.
