Librarian notes vacation for pre school story hour
Mrs. Ellen Bauman announces a one week vacation for the pre school story hour on Wednesday morning with regular programs resuming August 23 at the library. All pre school children are invited. Certificates for the elementary summer program have not yet arrived but will be announced to readers when issued. Phillip Hearnsberger earned a Bachelor of Science during summer commencement at Sam Houston State University where about 780 graduates received degrees across three ceremonies in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom. Family attendance included wife Mary Grace, parents, mother in law, and sister in law. James Walker and Joyce Erickson won their first state tennis match in Waco before quarterfinals set for 6 p.m. Sunday. Finals are planned for Sunday.

Gladewater school opens August 21 with regular schedule
Gladewater Schools begin Monday August 21 at 8 20 a m with a regular schedule. High school students assemble in the auditorium and may pick up schedules midweek in the principal s office. New students may collect them Friday. Middle School schedules are available 8 30 a m to 4 p m Tuesday through Friday. Buses run on their usual routes with several listed corridors and drivers.

Maxey Acres clubhouse destroyed by lightning fire
A 37 year old Maxey Acres Golf Clubhouse was leveled about 6:58 p.m. Thursday after a thunderstorm and lightning likely started the blaze. Firefighters faced water shortages but saved much golf equipment. owner Fred Maxey plans rebuilding as soon as possible. The incident canceled the first annual invitational set for Aug 25-27 though the course remains open for play.
