Beating at Cade's Service Station Leaves Couple Hospitalized

Grover Cater and his wife, both seriously injured, were robbed at Cade's Service Station in Winona around 1 a.m. Saturday. The 72 year old and 57 year old woman were listed in critical condition at Mother Frances Hospital after assailants struck them and took nearly $200.

Two New Parties Certified For November Ballot In Texas

Secretary of State Bob Bullock certified two new political parties La Raza Unida and Socialist Workers for the November general election ballot, joining Democrats and Republicans. The parties filed petitions with more than 2365 signatures. American Party seeks more time to gather needed signatures. Socialist Workers nominate Richard Garcia for U S senator and Debby Leonard for governor. La Raza Unida lists numerous candidates including Ramsey Ramuniz for governor and Flores Amaya for U S senator. Bullock noted he did not verify signatures beyond spot checks and acknowledged limited staff made full validation impractical.

Mrs Gene Causey 51 Dies After Long Illness

Funeral services for Mrs. Evelyn Marlee Causey 51 were held Wednesday at 10 in the North Main Church of Christ with Walter Talley officiating. Burial followed in Wood Cemetery. She died Tuesday morning at 6:25 in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. She was born Frankston July 29, 1921 and lived most of her life in Gladewater. She worked in the Municipal Hospital dietary department and was a longtime carrier for The Mirror. Survived by husband Gene two sons Richard and John two daughters Opal Slusser and Kathryn Trull two granddaughters Melissa and Pamela Causey and her father George A Atwood a sister Florene Hardman and others.

Gladewater Schools Adopt Quarter System for 1973-74

Gladewater Texas will shift to a quarter system starting with the 1973-74 school year under House Bill 1078. The district will operate three quarters this year due to economic constraints, with quarters running August 21 to November 14, November 16 to February 21, and February 26 to May 25.

Gladewater Chamber discusses centennial plans for 1973

At the Tuesday luncheon meeting of the Chamber of Commerce directors, discussion covered Gladewater's upcoming centennial year 1973. Secretary-manager Mrs. Jo Wiley said a charter marking the city's 100th founding has been applied for.

City Tax Collects $335 946 As Of July 31

Loyd Towery city tax assessor collector said gross city property tax collections reached 335 946 24 dollars as of July 31, about 92.3 percent of the total rolls. Total assessed tax stands at 364 110 with an ad valorem rate of 2.50 per 100. Discounts for early payments totaled 4 968 58, and from Aug 1 delinquent accounts incur a 1.5 percent monthly penalty.

City water use and sales rise and fall with heat and rain

The hot dry weather stress has pushed the filtration plant to 2,096,100 gallons in 24 hours while capacity can double. Lake Gladewater level drops about 10 inches with potential rapid decline without rain, but no shortage or rationing is expected. June and July sales show 26.7 and 26.8 million gallons, versus 39 and 35 million in prior years. Unofficial June rainfall was 6.4 inches and July 3.5 inches.

Tyler Returns to Days of the Old West Rat Bounty Plan

Tyler city commission starts a bounty paying 10 cents per rat tail to reduce a rodent problem. Tyler Smith County Health Department distributes 600 pounds of rat poison. 55 pounds collected by Wednesday. The program aims to control overpopulated areas. residents should contact the Health Department for roden control.
