City Council approves iron ore gravel bids in special session

City council members met in a special session Tuesday night to approve gravel bids. W A Steed offered the low bid at 3.00 per five yard load, with Jim Holcomb at 5.00 and J A Andy Tuttle at 3.50. City trucks will haul the gravel. City Manager Tony Williams led a workshop on meeting procedures and opened meetings rules. City Attorney Jack Finley praised council service after seven years as City Judge.

Wildflower Festival tennis duo place second in Hughes Springs

Joyce Erickson and James Walker, both aged tennis buffs, earned second in the annual Wildflower Festival Tennis Tournament held over the weekend in Hughes Springs amid 24 entries. Walker notes younger players appear each year as he battles soreness Monday after the event.

Third person indicted in Phillips murder case

James Millard Moulton 43, of Sands Motel Longview, was arrested April 25 and indicted for conspiracy to commit burglary in the Inez Phillips murder case. Bond set at 50000 by Justice Cashell. This marks the third indictment as Gladewater police Gregg County Sheriff Texas Ranger continued two year investigation. Faulder 39 and McCann alias Summers face capital murder charges with bonds 50000 and 100000 respectively. District Attorney Hull to present cases to grand jury Monday as May June jury to be empaneled in district court.

Accreditation team surveys Ambassador College bid for candidacy

An eight member accreditation team from two national associations evaluates Ambassador College for candidacy status. The SACS chaired by Dr. Francis Bonner of Furman University includes a special representative from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. They assess nine standards including purpose, organization and administration, educational program, financial resources, faculty, library, student services, physical plant and special activities.

Gladewater PD Near Full Strength As New Officer Joins

Police Chief Jimmy Davis said the Gladewater Police Department is near its normal complement as Khavee Barryer, 22, will report for duty Saturday. Barryer comes from Longview and studies police science at Kilgore College. The force has stayed at full operation with extended hours and mutual aid, while Davis rebuilt after five officers, a cadet and two dispatchers quit in protest. Over 35 applicants remain in the hiring pool.

Puppetry Workshop Draws 18 NE Texas Libraries

Lee Public Library hosted a one day puppet workshop with 18 Northeast Texas cities represented. Molly Jameson of Dallas taught puppet making and shows with Penny Yost of NETLS directing. The nutrition show remains at Lee Library through May 7 and June will bring genealogy workshops.
