Former Ranger E J Banks to head Gladewater police department
City Manager Tony N Williams announced veteran lawman E J Banks would become chief of police at a 9060 year post May 1 following the resignation of Chief Cris Morrow who served four years. Morrow will move to Cherokee County and oversees a dramatic gunfight incident from 1971. Banks is a 40 year veteran who previously led the Texas Rangers and later restructured Big Spring police. He will lead a modernizing effort and establish a reserve force to back up regular officers.

Motel Owner Shot During Robbery At Gladewater
Gladewater police say Leo J. Ashcraft, Dixie Motel owner, was shot in the back during a robbery by two men at 12:15 a.m. Saturday. Ashcraft, in very satisfactory condition, and his wife were robbed of about 150 to 200 dollars. the suspects fled on foot.
