Gladewater Chamber of Commerce honored citizens at its annual membership banquet, naming Milton Bolgiano as Citizen of the Year and Virgil Wallace as Bradley Award recipient. Shriners Plan News Day Sale May 1 in Gregg County
Shriners will hold News Day on May 1 in Gregg County selling a Shrine newspaper to inform the public about their work for crippled and burned children. Funds from the sale support Shriners Hospitals and Burns Institute research including dressings and a blood endotoxin filter still in experimental stages.

Mrs Castleberry dies in Tyler
Mary Alma Castleberry 75 of 718 West Pacific died Friday night at Mother Frances Hospital Tyler after a brief illness. Funeral services are Monday at 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Alexander officiating. Burial in Lone Star Cemetery Point under Malcolm Stone Funeral Home. Survivors include two daughters Patsy Gage Tyler Frances Melton Ft Worth one son Orville Castleberry DeFallas Ark three brothers James Edgar and John Burkett and sister Alice Wheeless Point nine grandchildren eight great grandchildren. Pallbearers are grandsons. The text also notes Shriners Burns Institute progress and a May 1 Paper Sale across 16 East Texas counties to raise Shrine Newspapers funds.

Jim Howard dies at 75 in Gladewater
Jim Howard 75 of 502 West Gay Avenue died Thursday at 8 45 p m in a local hospital after a period of failing health. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p m at Malcolm Stone Funeral Home Chapel with Rev B F Risinger officiating. Burial followed at Gladewater Memorial Park. He was born August 17 1900 in Rockwall County and was a retired police officer and a Baptist who had lived in Gladewater 46 years. Survivors include his wife Lucille a daughter Mrs Philip Pring of Euless a son Allen Russom two grandsons and one great granddaughter.

Jaws of Life Tool Acquired by Gladewater Rescue Team
The Gladewater Roach Rescue team bought a Jaws of Life rescue tool for about 5000 dollars this week. Members earlier staged a drive and displayed the tool at a city park fish fry on Friday night. Demonstrations showed it could free a person from a wrecked car in minutes. Kilgore Rescue Team is the only other local holder of a Jaws in the area. Gladewater Reach members say they will pursue more rescue equipment.

Gladewater Girls Tennis Pursue State Meet Title
Gladewater advances to the state meet after sweeping both doubles and singles titles at the Regional Girls Tennis Tournament at UT Arlington. Kathy Hill and Rhonda Thomas won doubles 6-4 6-4 over Van’s Pam Adrain and Marsha Dove, while Sharon Scurlock claimed the singles crown with a 6-2 6-4 win over White Oak’s Kim Muckleroy.
