Two Men Arrested In Gladewater For Marijuana Possession

Glade police report a quiet weekend ended with Sunday arrests at 4 p.m. at the U S Highway 271 and SH 135 intersection. William Felix Gans, 26, of Dallas, charged with felony controlled substance possession, arraigned in Longview with $3,000 bond. William C Holleman, 27, of Longview, charged with misdemeanor possession, arraigned in Longview with $1,500 bond. Det. Sgt. Bill Brown and Officer Ken Garriott made the arrests.

East Mountain Volunteers Build Rural Fire Department

East Mountain in Upshur County formed a full volunteer fire department with three trucks a new station and 21 trained volunteers serving an 80 square mile area. Led by Chief Kenneth Eddy and Assistant Chief Randy Wilson the group is seeking a rescue communications vehicle and continues frequent training to handle modern home and rural fires.

St Mark’s observes 31st anniversary with service and luncheon

St Mark’s Episcopal Church will observe its 31st anniversary on Sunday April 24 with a 1130 am morning prayer service led by Gordon Mayer layreader and senior warden. A covered dish luncheon follows in the parish house fellowship hall and a brief program on St Mark’s life and church history will be presented.

Hugman Kent Clinic Expands Doubling Building Size

Construction begins on a 2500 square foot expansion at Hugman Kent Clinic 215 West Upshur nearly doubling the facility. The project adds a third office suite a new consulting room three treatment rooms and enlarged foyer waiting and business areas. Dr. Hugman and Dr. Kent have practiced in Gladewater since 1958 and 1966 respectively and remain on the Gladewater Municipal Hospital staff.

Gay Avenue school hosts kiddie show Saturday

The Gay Avenue school auditorium will present a kiddie show Saturday April 23 sponsored by the youth of the First Methodist Church. Admission is 50 cents per child with a parent required for children under five. The program runs 2 to 4 pm and features cartoons plus Namu the Killer Whale.

Gladewater Board Rehires All Teachers for 1977-78

Gladewater school board spent two and a half hours Monday night before an executive session renewing all teacher contracts for the 1977-78 year. The meeting covered building committee report, educational TV contracts, non professional salaries, and a 180 day school calendar pending state action. Delinquent taxes totaled 73,092 for March as collections surged. first delinquent tax suits are planned for June.

Chesney rites held Tuesday

Funeral services for Mrs Nancy Mae Chesney 71 of 512 W Pacific were held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Theresa's Catholic Church with Father John Rohrman officiating. Burial followed at Gladewater Memorial Park. She died Sunday in a Tyler hospital after a long illness. Survivors include her husband John a daughter Mamie Irene Higdon Mineola a brother Harry Pillow Mineola two sisters Mamie Cunningham Mineola five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Joseph Black rites held for longtime Gladewater resident

Joseph Black 79 of Gladewater died Monday night after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Rev. Chester Gleason and Rev. LaVern Rudolph officiating. Interment followed at Memorial Park. He was a retired grocer and member of First Christian Church. Born April 15, 1898 near DeKalb, he is survived by his widow Thelma, a son Frank of Mesquite, two brothers Carl of Shreveport and Tom of El Dorado, plus two grandchildren and a great grandchild.

Building committee reports on new school construction plans

Jack Earp chair reports on visits to Hawkins Sabine Longview Van Pine Tree White Oak and Hallsville noting gym floors safety and design issues. He praises Van gym and Sabine track while flagging Longview sheetrock and high upkeep. The group plans another Hallsville visit and suggests inviting Hawkins architect and teachers for ideas.

Saddle Club Hosts East Texas Horse Show Open Event

The Gladewater Saddle Club sponsors the East Texas Horse Show Association open show at Circle A arena on Harrison and Fisher Roads Halter classes start at 9 a.m. with age and gender divisions, followed by performance classes at noon. Two New Policemen Hired Here In Police Shakeup

Police Chief Jimmy L. Davis announced the hiring of two new officers to replace eight resignations and the 17 member reserve unit. Dewey Leon Geddie 26 of Longview and Kevin Jacobs 23 of Shreveport La will join duty soon. Davis noted 35 applications and careful screening with no rush to appoint higher ranks.
