Decree signed in Texas county precincts case end to 1980 census action

Gregg County Commissioners Court and plaintiffs in a 1976 class action filed in U S District Court signed a Consent Decree Monday. It bars further court action for 180 days after the 1980 census results are certified and hearings held. The TY-76-368-CA suit by Clarence Bailey and Bennie Jackson alleged rights violations and dilution of voting strength by how four precincts are drawn.

Davis named chief of Gladewater Police Department

City Manager Tony N Williams named Jimmy Davis permanent chief of the Gladewater Police Department at an $11 280 yearly salary. Davis, 36, has served as acting chief for two months after E J Banks was fired over budget disputes. He is a native of DeKalb with a long law enforcement career starting in 1964 and includes time with Longview and Gladewater police.

City Council to swear in new mayor and officers

The council will swear in James Goggans Roy Pynes James N Walker and Harold Wells, elect a mayor and mayor pro tem, appoint city officials, hold zoning hearings, bid on street projects, and review a teletype interagency link. Jack Redwood seeks appearance. briefing at 7 a.m. at city hall.

Gladewater Hospital Receives AHA Cost Monitoring Honor

Gladewater Municipal Hospital earns a Certificate of Recognition from the American Hospital Association for monitoring costs. The program collects cost and productivity data from over 3000 health care institutions to gauge cost effectiveness. Since 1959 the hospital participates in AHA programs. Acting Administrator Paul R. Bennett says the shared data serves as a valuable management tool for cost containment and improved procedures.

Beulah Hodges Rites Held for 92 Year Old Resident

Funeral services for Beulah Maude Hodges 92 were conducted at 2 30 p m in Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Rev Chester Gleason and Rev LaVerne Rudolph officiating. Burial followed at Memorial Park. She died Sunday in a local nursing home after a long illness. Survivors include two daughters Mrs Vercella Spier and Mrs William Gregory a son Harry Jordan one sister Mrs Esther Ross eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Bill Barrick Steward Barrick Mike Mickler Charles Ashcraft Jack Ester and Bill Gilliam.

Payday change for GI Bill recipients announced

The VACO A change will shift VA education program payments to end of month, affecting 1.5 million veterans dependents and service members enrolled. Newsom Named to New Post in Gregg County Sheriff’s Dept

Gregg County commissioners accepted Sheriff Tom Welch’s recommendations for personnel changes. Captain Hal Newsom, former Crime Prevention Division head, was appointed to the administrative post left by the late Captain Tom Johnson. Captain Newsom will be replaced in Crime Prevention by Donald Wayne Gill with salary set at 863.75 dollars monthly. Deputy William Leroy Wallace to receive a raise after training, effective April.

Gladewater School Board Certifies Election Returns

Gladewater school board canvassed votes from the April 2 election and certified incumbents Jack Earp Jack Finley and John Steger were reelected without opposition. Total votes were 315 with Earp leading the ticket 298. The board awarded a building contract to Luckabaugh Construction for four temporary frame classrooms at Gay Avenue School for the 1977 78 term at 39700, after considering other bids.
