Dallas Spring Festival Bicycle Grand Prix winner named

Mrs Sue Fenellen of Ambassador College won the first annual Dallas Spring Festival Bicycle Grand Prix held on a blocked section of Woodall Rodgers Freeway despite rain and cold. The event closed amid festive coverage and local spectators.

Councilmen sworn in as Johnston is re-elected mayor

City council swore in four members and re elected O G Johnston as mayor for a third straight term. James Walker was elected mayor pro tempore. The meeting, held Tuesday evening to meet a charter requirement, addressed several required formalities and action items.

Two from Gwater to attend national bank women's meet

Mrs. Virginia Bates and Mrs. Mary Nell Holt both assistant cashiers at The First State Bank will attend the Southwestern Regional Conference of the National Association of Bank Women Inc. in Oklahoma City April 13 to 15. NABW Inc. has 10 000 plus members and promotes education for women bank executives while encouraging young women to enter banking. The organization is in its fifty first year with Miss Barbara Pendleton as national president.

New plant to build on Glade site

J Adam Laboratories of Alexandria Virginia will establish a plant in Gladewater. Lindyn Sims of Longview says construction begins within 60 days and full operation by mid July. The plant will produce liquid animal feed supplement with 25 thousand tons yearly capacity. About 15 workers will be employed, mainly truck drivers, and materials arrive by rail and truck.

The Gladewater school board amended its student appearance policy after years of adjusting to longer hair for boys and shorter dresses for girls. The policy emphasizes education quality, good work habits, cooperative attitude, citizenship, and respectful conduct under school authority.

Gladewater school board rehires staff and reorganizes

The Gladewater board swore in Virgil Wallace and Medro Barnes who were re-elected. John Shipp was re-elected president with Virgil Wallace as vice president and Harold McDowell as secretary treasurer. Bids on two buses were opened and expulsion of four students for drug policy violations was approved. Thirty-five transfers and resignations of five teachers were announced as funds and tennis court plans were discussed.

The Chamber of Commerce board heard Roy Johnson’s report on the annual banquet. Secretary-manager Jo Wiley reported 461 tickets sold and 250 attended the reception. Irene Barker urged more volunteers for the Gladewater Centennial. Ernest Martin announced a new manufacturing firm lease along the T P tracks. President Finley proposed inviting firemen to the police appreciation banquet. date TBD. A bid for a new light duty tractor at Gladewater Memorial Park was accepted at 1900 dollars from Crim Truck and Tractor.

Sam L Vernon Dies in Gregg County at 79

Funeral services for Sam L Vernon 79 were held Wednesday at the North Main Church of Christ with Elmer Moore and Walter Talley officiating. Burial followed at Rock Springs Cemetery under Malcolm Stone Funeral Home. A WWI veteran and longtime Gladewater resident, he left a wife Amanda, two daughters Ruth Tyler and Nellie Hagius, two sons Carroll and Jordy, ten grandchildren, and four sisters.

Pallbearers were her grandsons. She was born in Illinois moved here at eight and belonged to the Methodist church.
