10 year old invents reading and math aid

Ray Cumbie Jr. built a reading and math teaching aid at Broadway School. The device uses a 24 volt bulb and switchboard with plugs to verify correct answers, lighting the meter when correct. Ray plans to be a telephone man, not an inventor, and demonstrated the project wearing a lineman style tool belt.

Mrs Walter Hart Rites Held For Local Educator

Funeral services were conducted for Mrs Elenwyn Hart 58 in Gladewater after a yearlong illness. The First Baptist Church hosted the 3 p.m. Saturday ceremony with burial at Harris Creek Cemetery in Smith County. She taught at Hogg Junior High and Union Grove, studied at several universities, and was wife of Dr Walter Hart with two daughters, a brother, and a grandchild surviving.

Camp Fire Girls arts and crafts show opens Tuesday

Gladewater Camp Fire Girls announce their annual arts and crafts show and open house Tuesday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the redecorated Camp Fire Center. Four divisions. best of show wins a free week at Camp Natowa. Girls may enter two items each in art, crafts, needlework, science, poking and photography.

Oil firm asks RRC to hear field split north south

General American Oil of Texas asks the Texas Railroad Commission to hold a hearing in early June on splitting the East Texas field along a Kilgore line into north and south divisions. The move aims to conserve gas and oil by adjusting separate allowables, citing south division pressure decline and water movement. Sections impacted include Rusk Upshur Smith and Gregg counties.

Kilgore Wins Bid for 1.5 Million Plastic Bag Plant

Pak-Sher Manufacturing Co Inc to build a 20 600 square foot facility on a five acre Kilgore site. Alvin Wylie says the plant will supply southern retailers and create 35 to 40 local jobs. Charles Shertzer will serve as president with Raymond Tate and T G Hutt among the principals. Construction starts immediately with completion in mid June and production by August 1 using equipment from South Africa. A Special railroad spur will be installed to support the facility.
