Garth Cockerell won Position 5 on the Gladewater School Board in a tight three way race. Dr. Robert Hugman was elected to Position 4 unopposed. Voters cast 385 ballots across Gladewater Starrville Pritchett and Friendship with totals: 272 in Gladewater, 36 Starrville, 52 Pritchett, 25 Friendship.

Lester Weir Dies Sunday at 64 in Gladewater
Lester Leslie Weir 64 of 315 South Center died Sunday in East Texas Tuberculosis Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Stone Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Elmer Kelley officiating. Burial followed at Gladewater Memorial Park. He had lived in Gladewater since 1931, worked for Mobil Pipeline, and was a member of Memorial Baptist Church. Survivors: widow Ethel, step son Billy Applegate, sisters Myrtle Knox and Ottney Miller, half brother Mitchell Moore, brother B B Weir, and other relatives. Pallbearers: Bob Hays, Bobby Cannon, Charles Miller, Curtis Gage, Richard Timmons, Jimmy Don Rose.

Arrest Made in Death of Mrs. Burney in Gladewater
A 49 year old Mineola man was arrested by Gladewater and Wood County officers in the hit and run death of Mrs Lillie Burney 68 who was struck March 14 while crossing West Upshur. He appeared before Justice Boss DeLay and bond was set at 7500 dollars. He remained jailed Wednesday as investigation continued.

District UIL Play Contest Set for GHS Auditorium
The UIL one act play district contest will be at Gladewater High School on Friday April 11 at 3 p.m. Host GHS presents The Scarecrow with a cast led by Timmy Henry and Everett Jobe. other district entries include Jefferson Daingerfield West Rusk Halls ville and Pittsburg High. The critic judge is Jack Monte Jones of Henderson County Junior College. Tickets cost 25 cents for students and 50 cents for adults. regional advancement goes to North Texas State University on April 19.
